It's only real competition is Chrono Trigger. 99% of jrpg's are shit. The rest are decent like some of the FF series but otherwise pretty meh. Very fucking rarely does a good JRPG come along that hooks you and ascends far beyond all the shit around it and P5 and Chrono Trigger are those. Much like Witcher 3, OG Dragon Age, and New Vegas for RPG's.

If you're too peabrained to use commands there's literally a single file you can drag and drop into the games directory and you get fully controllable AI. I still prefer giving the party members orders rather than controlling them, you can just let them do what they want a lot of the time and it helps combat feel more fun and more like they are real characters, I just switch to direct control in bosses, playing the full game in direct control is basically easy mode.

I always just make sure I have the correct personas I need, You can carry like 12 personas you basically have the potential to be 12 party members and that's OP enough, it's not hard to create a persona with a few bufffs or debuffs, it's certainly a lot more tactical in my opinion. Full control over everyone just feels easily abusable, I play all the Personas using commands rather than direct control

If you're emulating P3FES it's extremely easy to drag and drop one file into the game to give you control of everyone, it works exactly like in P4, you would never tell it's a hack

I was thinking about Xenogears recently, but what caused JRPGs to lose all their scope? The plot of XG is actually insane, so why hasn't anyone even come close to doing something on that scale? Takahashi is doing good at Nintendo, but his fire seems to have burned out a decent bit.

The scope of it is still impressive and the amount of moving parts in the story is interesting as hell. The thematic elements of the story aren't extremely basic like most modern JRPGs that have this hate boner for religion and establishments. The idea that this game could have existed is so interesting to me and that seems to be lost after the PS1 era.

Modern JRPGs don't really have intriguing narratives.

Nintendo seems more than willing to let him do what he wants. The Iwata asks basically confirmed that they let him do whatever he felt like. XC2 is the best selling Xeno game to date, so hopefully he gets more experimental with his narratives again. XC2 has a lot of XG in its DNA, but the characters needed more time.

The last Nintendo console I bought was a DS, so no, I'm not a Nintendo shill.
I don't see what Nintendo has to do with anything either since they have no notable competition to bring to the table, but whatever floats your boat, Persona, like most of Megaten, is still mediocre.
So you're the usual 2deep4u idiot who doesn't even play JRPGs, figured as much.

The only impressive thing about Xenogears is how much it set out to do and how extremely little it accomplished, not just on gameplay but on narrative too.
The "thematic" elements of the story are all superficial as hell, much like the average DEEP RPG like Torment or even Persona, the ideas taken from both Qabbalah and Jungian psychology are laughably shallow when not outright wrong and distorted for the sake of twists and melodrama, this is without considering the really, really banal twist of the Ethos and the church being the bad guys all along, the main villain cursing god because his crush died, the numerous /m/ references (read: I don't really have any creative talent so I'll reference other people's work to get brownie points from muh fellow otaku) which get old really fast and so on.

This is without getting into not just the atrocious pacing or the gameplay to cutscene ratio which is absolutely skewed in favour of cutscenes, but the absolute garbage gameplay, which for better or worse is also next to non existent.
Xenogears set out to be a poor man's Five Star Stories in videogame form and failed atrociously, both as a game and as a piece of narrative.

The AP system was pretty fun user. Stringing deathblows together was cool. I wish more JRPGs required the player to do more than just pick menu options.

Choose one, because Xenogears' system boils down to learning deathblow, spam triangle until your meter is full and then spam your strongest deathblow from a menu.
And this is without considering how shallow the entire combat system is, but if you have terminal ADHD I guess it's a good system, I'd still play Valkyrie Profile. Legend of Dragoon or a Mario RPG game in that case instead of something so primitive as Xenogears.
