Rising Thunder's cooldowns were basically meaningless. Most were so short that they'd recover well before you'd need/want to use it again, and some like whatsherface's fireball would instantly recover if it hit (making it a zoning tool with more risk-reward as a result).

League of fighters was an interesting project. It was made by some LoLplayers who were also into fighting games. It was a low budget fan game made as a passion project that also used skill cooldowns. Dev team even got FGC peoole like Chris G to playtest it and give feedback. It died same time as Rising Thunder.

SFxT gems didn't change your moveset or how your character worked, they were all star boosts or easy mode gems. Also they didn't suck because they let you customize your character, they sucked because they didn't change your character at all, the effects were single use and temporary, and the DLC gems were flat out pay to win improvements of the gems that exist in the game. Cooldowns have weird implications for a fighter, locking you out of moves for a resource you can't really control takes some control away from the player. So if someone does a move twice, you might be only able to punish it once which could get annoy. From the looks of that trailer though it might end up being more of an aesthetic thing, moves such as Katalina's DP refilled almost instantly. Which is also kind of how it worked in Rising Thunder.

There are 3 other issues this system presents. One, that it appears you only get one ex moves, two every character is limited to 4 moves and three you only get one strength of each moves. None of these are deal breakers but they do reduce how many aspects the game has going on. So if you wanted to zone you wouldn't be able to mix up the speed of your fireballs. Unless other mechanics are introduced to fill this gap.

I wont blame them because Cygames is a relatively unknown developer in the west. They only ever had traction with Shadowverse and recently with Dragalia Lost, but thats mostly because of the Nintendo partnership initially. Plus, there's a really common miaconception that succesful gacha devs are just some mid budget organization when in fact they're some of the most lucrative studios around, even more so than developers for console games

Games like this are made with fans of the IP in mind first and fans of fighting games second, so I'd say no. If ArcSys are really interested in dumbing down all their games a lot, I'd say it won't be apparent until the next GG, which we already know will be simpler, but not to what extent.

Honestly I think cooldowns on the "better" special moves wouldn't change that much. You already experience the same with stuff like Ultra and V-trigger in the SF fight. Once the meter fills up (which is inevitable since its bound to taking damage), their reportoire of moves change, which becomes something you have to account for as a player.

In the same way, CD:s just means that you as a player will just play around their access to certain moves. It increases/decreases the risk associated with certain plays, which will create a less stagnant game flow as your options will ebb and flow situationally (for comparison, the grid in UNIST does something similar).

But basically I don't think it would change that much compared to the basic fighting game formula. Like I said, a majority of fighting games already have resource management.

With vtrigger yes, but a lot of people dislike that whole system. SFV gets accused of "locking moves up" quite a bit.

Meter is a tricky one, cause it is kinda true but also not. If you lack meter you can still do a version of a special, so it is only the properties of a super you lack. Which is generally a trade off for the strengths that move has like invincibility. Though you do also get ex moves that change a move in really significant ways, like the trajectory of a fireball. So it does kind of fit. There is also kind of a difference between taking action to build and manage meter, and simply waiting to have access to a move.

I think my problem comes in with a situation where after punishing someone (especially for sloppy play), they can just repeat their action while I can't repeat the punish. That can exist with something like meter, SFV even fucks this up again as many DPs aren't invincible without meter. But the best scenario is you can normally deal with stuff and a resource allows you to do it better. That can be done with CD but i can see people getting frustrated that the reason they couldn't deal with something better isn't in their control.

Fundamentally, there's no difference between a normal button and a special button. It's simply that the more "special" moves such as shoryuken are traditionally locked behind a harder input rather than a single button press. Some fighting games can also have rules for which moves can combo into each other while others do not

For instance, Elena in SFIV was a fine zoner even though she mostly just used normal buttons. You don't need a special move to throw projectiles to be a zoner. Meanwhile, characters like Lambda-11 threw projectiles with her normal buttons.

Like, your best punish does not necessary need a special move. It's likely since a special move tend to have a "high damage property", but your best punish could also be a heavy punch.

any cooldown more than "as soon as the move's recovery is over you can do another one again" will suffer from this problem.

the main thing that makes fighting games hard for new players isn't the inputs, its that people aren't predictable and there are a ton of moves people can potentially throw at any given time. knowing what options someone could theoretically hit you with at any given time/spacing is half the fight. by introducing move cooldowns (that are super obvious on the screen) you are broadcasting that you have only so many options you could do.

This, it'll probably be too short to do anything but be a rough visual indicator of then your recovery frames end/fireball is off screen and you can move again.

The helmet will work like Ky from GG or just be an easy alt. As in knock her down a certain amount of times and the helmet will get knocked off

But it isn't like he can do this instantly, there is recovery and you usually can't have a stream on screen at the same time. From what we have seen, Katalina's DP recovers before she even lands. It is logical to assume then the other moves work in a similar way.

So it isn't throw then wait 3 seconds for another one, the cooldown is basically just visualising your recovery frames

While in Lancelot's "loadout" he seems to have different 2 EX moves and not dupe icons. It does change how I thought a lot of stuff would work. Like in the Lowain trailer he does an ex move where both his friends leap in one on the ground and the other jumping. I figured you'd get 2 variants + ex, with the normal variants only being one friend coming in and the ex combining it. But if you only have one non-ex version it does limit the move set a bit

Like I said in it seems like your specials will have variants and that'll affect how the moves CD will be.

I actually think Xrd is already completely accessible outside of it having a small playerbase so the only people now playing it are people who are good at the game, and it can be hard for a new player to catch up with that. The game itself is pretty easy to pick up and play at a somewhat competent level though, and there are plenty of characters with a relatively low skill floor. People just act like it's hard to pick up because of Accent Core, which was actually much less accessible, but Xrd's much easier to get into. I still think it could be simplified in some ways to its benefit, but I don't think it's all that intimidating for someone who actually tries it, what intimidates most people is just the reputation the game has for being tough to learn, and that's compounded by thinking they need to learn everything at once when in reality it's not the end of the world if you don't know how to Jump Install or something like that when starting out.

I agree, and I think it's true of a lot of other fighting games as well, even when people phrase it in such a way that they're praising it. A lot of people talk about how difficult VF is for example, and its fans of the game and detractors alike that do that, but in doing so they give off an image that it'll take way longer than it probably actually would take you to play at a somewhat competent level, and so a lot of people just don't bother with it as a result.

Because a huge aspect of fighters is getting better. If the ceiling is low that means there is less to aim for, higher level player ultimately isn't that different from yours. A deeper game can also allow for more variety, so while you still aren't good at everything they can carve a niche they like. Depth offers lots of different things to lots of different people.
