Why is the Strategy Genre dead?

What happened to the industry where strategy games fell out of favor and people stopped making them?
Can anyone recommend some good diamond in the rough strategy games? Total War, Civ, starcraft I have played it all to death I need something to scratch that strategy itch.

lmao imagine being an unironic rts cuck in this current year

Pretty sure the AoE2 community was never as alive as now. Though would be nice if they made a new one already.

Fprts is the future youtu.be/ct8vg5JaV7c?t=53

so, mount and blade.. bannerlord?

haha.

Have you played any Grand Strategy like Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Victoria, Hearts of Iron? They've had a large boom a few years ago and are the most popular type of strategy games after mainstream stuff like Civilization.
If you prefer something more traditional yet different, economic strategies are also not faring badly, with Tropico 6 and Anno 1800 being freshly released.
RTS is one genre that's truly dead with Company of Heroes 2 being the last man standing with a relatively healthy playerbase for MP shenanigans.

It's boring

>Have you played any Grand Strategy
Don't tell him about that shit, it's gone down the shitter thanks to Johan being the faggot jew that he is

My favorite is Europa Universalis IV. But it's really a subpar game without the DLC's so I'd say buy the base game and pirate the DLC's. Out of all the strategy games I've played EU4 has the best AI, not that its great but its acceptable. Vic 2 with HPM mod is pretty good. HOI4 is imo boring. Stellaris would be trash, but with gladius AI its alright if you like sci-fi you'll probably like it. CK2 is okay but not my jam.

I used to like Total War but CA is so retarded and their AI just keeps getting worse every release. Civ is the same thing, not to mention they charge 40 euros for dlcs that they market as expansions.

Frostpunk was alright but I didn't want to replay it. Same thing with This War of Mine, fun for one playthrough but never picked it up again.

Rimworld is good. Starcraft II was good and I played fucktons of multiplayer but David Kim was a retard at balancing so it died.

XCOM 2 was enjoyable but the gameplay loop is boring and repetitive to me. Move slowly, trigger one pod, kill that pod, repeat. I liked it more than Xenonauts which felt kinda bare-bones and just as repetitive.

Tropico 6 was just a huge dissapointment to me, its exactly like 5 with a few features added ontop.

There's Company of Heroes which has a nice campaign. Then there's Company of Heroes 2 with their shitty dlc commander policy and ok multiplayer.

I guess im just sharing my tastes to see if anyone agrees or disagrees and if you have any suggestions based on them.

I don't understand why Planetary Annihilation didn't pick up in popularity with classic RTS fans, they should have found it perfect to their liking. It's distilled RTS warfare and also looks stunning.

>EU4 has the best AI

Those fucks took my money for early access then developed it, released a game with a few more features. THEN they developed and released Titans for full price. Thats paradox levels of jew greediness. They're practically the same fucking games.

moooooot

If you played Starcraft a lot, try Supreme Commander instead.

If you only played Civ 5 or 6, try Civ 4.

Try Sins of a Solar Empire for an interesting hybrid of RTS/4X

All of these games have really well designed gameplay and are fun to play.

Out of all the games in the post that I mentioned EU4 has the only AI that can challenge you. It has its moments of retardation like running for a mothballed fort or running away from an almost completed siege. But that's still way better then CIV AI levels of retardation of spamming low-tech units when you're in the modern age. Or TW levels of retardation where they just send all their melee infantry into the center of your battle line in a huge cluster to get surrounded.

>play everything that has been released
>several more games on the way
WTF WHY IS IT DED BRUH??

it takes too long per session

Play Myth 1 and 2

Because it's hard to control on console. Consoles dictate most games' success whether you like it or not.

It's not really dead, it's just what could be considered the face of RTS is dead or dying, like StarCraft, since it's somewhat niche to begin with and general audiences are more interested in YouTubers with bright hair and a canned snarky personality than teams of mostly silent Koreans running on muscle memory. Its like wondering why the Chess grandmasters or the PGA tour isn't popular because you're comparing it to the NFL, FIFA or the Olympics. It's sufficiently popular, but niche, which means it survives but the possiblity of getting a cool or fun new IP is slim.

make battle of winterfell pls

>no one mentioned Wargame series
Wargame : airland battle or red dragon depending on your flavor, steel division is more hit or miss.

Nice, T90 is great.
Discovered him a few weeks ago by recommendation from friend. I'm not even an esports fag but I still enjoy all his vids.

Ultimate General:Civil War for those who doesnt recognize it. The creator of TW Darthmod. Its pretty damn good. It has a campaign where you resource manage your army with lite RPG elements and in the battles its like a much more fluid but less detailed Empire Total War. Too bad that battle results doesnt carry over in the campaign fully, as in you cant really weaken the enemy. Still solid.

the only real flaw in ultimate general is the lack of friendly fire

No one mentioned the Wargame series because the community is genuinely one of the worst I've seen in an RTS and Red Dragon managed to skullfuck the campaign into an unplayable mess while also making the multiplayer a pay-to-win DLC fuckfest.

Homeworld.

sell me on takeda 3 and is there a non jap/chink setting equivalent

strategy games require a lot of time investment and practice, so do not appeal to casual gamers. they are also not flashy so do not lend themselves well to esports, meaning they are hard to make profitable unless they are crammed with DLC

check out the Close Combat series if you need a new strategy game

Agreed. I think artillery does cause friendly fire tho if you were to fire on enemies while in melee with your troops. But muskets do not cause ff. Been a while since I played so idk if I remember it right.

Because you never had sex.

doesn't attract zoomer money as easily

PDX is deader than TW

What is a good RTS with an active online community?
I have always played RTS games only in single player and would like to try my hand at multiplayer. I tried playing Warcraft 3 melee but I'm not very fond of how it revolves around Hero units.

Honestly there just isn't enough innovation.
All I want is a true Empire building strategy game with in depth city-building.
Right all proper city-building games are just building cities for the sake of making a cool city.
I want to make a Cool, unique city that actually functions as an engine to conquer other empires.

"Why is it so slow? Why is the interface made of all that text? Pff it's taking too long",etc...
People are playing less & less varied games : now it's all FPS / RPG where you either shoot stuff to survive against outlaws/nazis/space marines or you use a sword/magic against generic dragons/orcs in a Tolkien/star wars/world war open (world) setting in a online battleroyale/deathmatch mode.
Repeat ad nauseam...

I wish C&C and Total War had a baby laid by a competent developer.

Spellforce

As someone said upthread AoE2 is more popular than ever. Northgard also has an active community if you're looking for a non-traditional RTS with low micro.

Have you played Wargame? It’s good.

>Unironically suggesting that unbalanced pile of turd

Wargame's battle engine used for a 20th Century Total War WHEN.
Maybe 1920-2020, since WW1 would be kind of hard to do properly. Though the setting could make for a good set piece tutorial.

Strategy games are only popular on PC and PC gaming in general is on the decline besides always-online ones due to rampant piracy.
