the gameplay is the best part

Combat wise? You gotta get used to pausing midfights to use items. I think that's the main problem the game has, its a mix between a classical rpg and an arpg and its hit or miss, when it doesn't work its frustrating but when everything clicks its fucking perfect. The soundtrack helps a lot on that regard, I'm actually still impressed by how good it is.
People tend to either love or hate this game. I think everyone should give it a try. It opens up after a long escort quest.

Buy Monster Hunter World instead, that game has almost same combat. Not even kidding around.

The end game enemies are a little tedious to fight, major damage sponges.

After fighting the Hydra near the start go back to the starting town to get a quest you can lose almost immediately

It's pretty ok, many bosses you encounter have supermassive health pools and you have no hope of killing them until your stats are high which makes you have to flee from then

Confusion of the highest order. You can only make baby-faced midget gremlins, not lolis.

Get a mage pawn with anodyne, stand in front of the ox and look for the prompt to kick it. Make sure you're getting hit by the ox so you take damage and the mage pawn casts anodyne. Position yourself in front of the mule when anodyne is cast and it'll heal you and the ox. Repeat until you hit Gran Soren. It still sucks, but it goes a lot faster.
Alternatively you can make a bunch of healing spring waters to manually heal your party and the ox as well.
