What they showed at the Invitational was really good but then they started dumbing down the game systems and cutting other character customization like the talisman, but people still held out hope it'd be good despite that. Then after like 3 years the beta finally hit, people were still reasonably hype about it because that little slice was good.

As we all know though, the game's plot goes downhill from there, and then the RMAH, and the rigged loot drops to funnel people into the RMAH, and that was it

One can only hope D4 goes back to what made Diablo 2 good, and it seems Blizz wants to look to D2 going forward with it but given the timing it reeks of desperate post-Blizzcon damage control and I'm not holding my breath. I'll be 10 years older by the time it comes out anyways.
