How do you feel about fan games, including (but not limited to) ROM hacks?
What are some of your favorites?
What separates a good fan game or hack from a bad one?
I'd like to discuss these things with you.

Some of those Mega Man and Sonic ROM hacks are really impressive. I like those a lot.
I used to make a ROM hack myself but I got too ambitious for just a one man team so now it's on hold. Woops.
Rockman Minus Infinity will always be the peak hack in terms of added content, I wonder if we'll ever see anything like it.
rockman 4 minus infinity is the greatest mega man romhack of all time and is up there for being one of the greatest romhacks of all time in general
Rom hacks are great if you really, really love a certain game/series and want more
Also for anyone who is interested in helping, /vr/ is doing an SMW collab hack right now
Probably the largest scale PS2 game mod ever. This madman even added new superbosses. youtube.com
Some fan games improve on and finely tune mechanics found in official games, and even add new ones in the process.
yes, I also liked Samus Returns.
Oh dang I must have missed that. Sounds interesting.
Mega Man fan games are the most interesting. I love seeing what kind of new gameplay can emerge from such simple mechanics. The "Make A Good Mega Man Level Contest" games are especially fascinating to me personally.
It's a fantastic hack, but probably diverges a bit too much from what I feel Mega Man should be. If you want something a bit more grounded and "authentic", I highly recommend Mega Man 4 Voyage.
Neat! Does /vr/ ever do things like this for other games?
AM2R makes me blow ten loads every time I play it

Honk honk, I once released this hack demo. If you liked SMW, then this is like more SMW with expanded graphics, bug fixes, control tweaks, and even a (rough) custom boss.
*starts speaking in extremely nasal voice*
"Yif-I mean, yeah! Support our games!"
*stops speaking and devs Quint's Revenge 2*
had that customs violet pink NES cart with all 6 Rollchan games plus Rock board and Rollchan 3 with revised levels and Kuja Killers tweaks!
>Neat! Does /vr/ ever do things like this for other games?
Not sure, I know in 2018 we tried to do a SMW collab but it fell apart. There's pretty much always a doom thread with links to WADs if that's your thing
Please stop reminding me that Davwin exists. The games are good, that's all that matters.
There's a cart? I'd like to see this.
For fans of 2D Metroid games there is an indie game call "A Robot Named Fight!" which you may want to look into. Basically as fan gamey you can get with an official on Steam video game.
>t. Ace
was a custom cart I ordered from an esoteric website that made multicarts and repros using new PCB boards, took months to arrive and I ordered with no label cause I wanted to do a custom one (never did).
Worth noting though it is going for a roguelike randomize playthrough type deal. You can unlock stuff for future runs. So while it is well made it isn't going to have a perfect flawless dungeon that you can explore. If that is a deal breaker then just letting you guys know now.
>roguelike
And just like that, you've lost me.
I'm actually braindead and can't remember who that is so I don't get the joke
Is it cheap?
>And just like that, you've lost me.
That is fair. I love exploring and backtracking hand made dungeons and such. ARNF is more for when you want a quick dose of gameplay though, not so much for the long term exploring.
about 25 bucks
It's also shit. But it did have one good idea of how the map works, with each tile you access lighting up the adjacent four tiles on it, which I think was a much better solution for revealing secret areas than SR's stupid scan system.
>Fan games
Often good.
>Rom hacks
Never seen anything good that wasn't a translation, bugfix, or balance adjustment.
Try mine Or don't, I'm not your guardian
This Aria Romhack. It changes the layout of the castle and adds an area similar to Circle of the Moon's arena. No souls, only weapons type arena.
