Kind of. Its refreshing to go back to the most traditional of traditional jrpgs but the can be kinda boring playing them back to back. Not gonna fight anyone who says theyre boring because essentially the the story and the bosses are what you're there for. If you want super engaging combat moment to moment you're not going to get it because by design 90% of the fights are throw away mobs.

I like Rocket Slime and DQM Joker but the main series games just don't really click with me.

I did kind of the same thing you did. Granted I played DQVIII first. But I felt burned out when I got to III. I took a break and came back a few months later. Then DQIII was amazing.
Remember, these games were made about a year apart. So you don't need to play them right after each other. You also should play the SNES remakes.

You're right. I guess I was just in a rush to complete them all, apparently you shouldn't do that with grind heavy games.
I do it because I think I'll appreciate it more to see the difference from the previous game to the next one, sort of like how others experienced it when it was released. I understand though what you mean. I've cheated for Dead or Alive by going directly to 6 and it's addicting, so it was worth.

Well, the game takes about 30 hours on average. More if you stop to capture certain monsters.

How far have you played?
Almost all DQ games have a slow start. And it's intentional, as it develops the world and characters. The longer the games go on, the more the context of things pile up to form a story. These games don't deliver story in direct cutscenes, but over many hours of NPC interaction, world building and indirect actions.
Not everyone likes that. There isn't generally a big flashy cutscene or epic battle in the first few hours of a DQ game. But they do come down the road. And when they do, they have far more impact than most RPGs, because of all that "boring" development in the early game.
If you mean shallow in terms of combat, then turn on the hard difficulty options.

It's fun. Playing X right now and I just might like this, I don't know. Didn't expect to because it's an MMO.
I did that, but I didn't burn out because the first two took me less than a week to get through combined, but they didn't endear me to the series. DQ III sucked me in though. I'm glad I had the time to play through nine JRPGs in a language I was still in the early stages of learning in 2015, I couldn't do that now.
