Soundtrack is pretty good but that applies to every Final Fantasy.

Zell is a chicken-wuss and a manlet.

The game's a complete mess that clearly had no clear direction other than to "be different from the other games," and big action and dramatic setpieces are just strung together in really flimsy, haphazard ways. But it does have some merits. Playing through Opera Omnia made me really appreciate how great the entire cast of characters in VIII really is, and I'd be lying if I said the Garden vs. Garden battle at the end of disc 2 wasn't fantastic. I don't rate it as one of the better Final Fantasy games, but it's still worth playing.

Could be worse. Could be ff xii in terms of story and MC. I understand why Vann was included and why the primary consumer was given so much precedence. But orphaned faggot standing around in 80% of cutscenes doing nothing is jarring.

The soundtrack was pretty hit-or-miss. Like a lot of the game, the idea just seemed to be, "Make it different! Don't make it sound like the older Final Fantasy games! We have to show everyone we aren't one-trick ponies after FFVII!" The Extreme is easily my favorite final boss theme in the series, and the really out-there tracks like Compression of Time and The Caste really helped sell the surreal atmosphere of those scenes. But it easily had the worst overworld theme in the entire series, and I was so fucking sick of hearing Fragments of Memories by the end of the game.

It followed FFVII and people hated it for not being a total copy of FFVII. But funny enough, a lot of the ideas in the game were unused ideas from FFVII. So in a sense, it actually is FFVII-2.

Aside from the design, which I actually prefer, the game is pretty good for a Final Fantasy game. But that's also its problem. It's a Final Fantasy game. With all the flaws that come with the series. Flow problems, story and graphics are more important than gameplay and design, plot twists invalidate large amounts of story, Rinoa's love story takes over the more interesting Laguna/Witch plots, side quests while better than most FF games are still kind of weak, missable items, overly complex magic system, horrible western translation, etc. Things most FF games have, aside from the junction system. Still, I was able to finish the game, which I can't say the same for most FF games.

The direction for movies in this game is legitimately the best direction in the whole series and in a lot of gaming. The game itself has lots of problems, but whoever was the director and team for the FMVs was amazing. They should have made Advent Children.

I speak Japanese fluently and the "translation comparisons" aren't that accurate and dont quite capture the tone of what he's saying.
It's like saying いただきます is "Thanks for the grub!" or よろしく is "Nice to meet you".

No, most of the replacements was him saying unique text. Him saying "what a pain" or "I'm bored" may not seem like much of a difference. But over the course of the game and so many examples, it actually develops an entirely different personality.
