>tfw keep failing super emerald blue spheres
>can't savescum
why is it so fucking hard
Tfw keep failing super emerald blue spheres
>tfw Mania forced me to git gud at Blue Sphere
Go 100% Mania and then come back to it and it'll be easy as fuck
They should have said “don’t get red spheres”
Honestly had no problem with the spheres. The catch the UFO in mania though...
The half pipe in sonic 2 tho
I'm the complete opposite. I've beaten maybe 3 sphere missions in Mania but I've gotten all the Chaos Emeralds, twice.
bait
Blue Sphere is piss easy.
Now hitting the UFOs in Sonic CD's special stages on the other hand. It's impossible to tell how close you are to them. I always just destroy the robot generators.
I know one guy back at school who played Sonic 3 and Knuckles so much he could get the super emeralds every single playthrough.
This was also the same guy who autistically knew all the Command and Conquer games off by heart and his favourite RPG of all time was Final Fantasy IV.
And was also the kind of guy who would bang his head on a desk if you said "hey bang your head on a desk really hard. It will be funny" and the madman would actually do it, uncomfortably loud. Several times.
It's just pure memorization.
The UFOs are a lot easier to hit in the remaster thankfully.
Use the pause button to stop yourself if needed.
Literally just git gud
Gimme a reminder which one is that? They're all pretty easy dude.
git gud fgt
The only Blue Sphere that's hard is the green one that they removed and Mania brought back.
It's really not hard you can get all the chaos emeralds by Hydrocity and all the super emeralds in Mushroom Hill. There's like 77 or so special rings so even if you fuck up on one's you have memorized there's always backups.
get good scrub
practice sonic and knuckles cus that the section that counts as "super Emeralds"
>There's like 77 or so special rings
I still occasionally stumble across paths I never knew existed in 3&K.
Am I the only one that enjoys the Sonic 3 portion of Sonic 3 & Knuckles much more than the & Knuckles portion?
>can't savescum
that just means you've got lots to learn. though for what it's worth, I'm still rooting for you.
Trust me, I know from experience, I played 3&K for years but those new ones still tripped me up at first. After you've gotten all 32 gold medals on each platform you just know it.
They both have their high and low points.
Which is precisely why I love it so much, every playthrough ends up a little bit different
I really like Mushroom Hill and Lava Reef's my favorite but I think 3's more consistently enjoyable, yeah
My biggest problem with the & Knuckles portion is that the bosses add more time than they should. Flying Battery act 2's boss begins with a pointless homage to Sonic 2's wing fortress boss that you can't speed up, then you gotta scale up to the top while also waiting for the slow rising floor and only once the floor finishes moving you can finally fight the real boss. Sandopolis act 1 is waiting for a slow rock monster to kill itself in the sand, and don't even get me started on Lava Reef act 2 where you just gotta sit there and wait for Robotnik to kill himself with spikeballs. Other than that yeah it's alright.
Yeah fucking destroying the bosses super quick in 3 is really satisfying, but I think they end up being a little too easy as a result. Not that the & Knuckles bosses aren't easy too, but you can't cheese them nearly as hard which I think gives them a little more presence.
I think what they were going for was making the bosses harder to just beat in 15 seconds considering its the second half of the game and they wanted to ramp up the difficulty. But yeah some of them do amount to just waiting which is lame.
Even in the remaster I never even bother going for Special Stages, I just get the Generators
Is this AIR thing the new official best way to play? Is Complete obsolete?
I have to force myself to slow down and look around other wise I just tear ass through the same path I have been since I was 5.
There's still some features from Complete that aren't in AIR that still makes it debatable (we had a whole 400+ post thread about it yesterday). But I'd say they are pretty neck and neck right now. So play AIR if widescreen and drop dash are more important to you, play Complete if total customization is more important to you.
iirc Complete still has some features that AIR doesn't. When AIR gets those then yeah no reason to bother with Complete.
They are easy at 50hz pal, plenty of time to react for rings and obstacles.
>playing Sonic 3 a million time as a kid but only recently finding out about the instashield
Heh, I'm a real Sonic fan kiddo, I don't need technological training wheels.
the what
blue spheres is only tricky because of the weird input timing to turn and jump, I mastered that when i was a kid though
ufos are annoying until you figure you you can just grind free time
I only do the special stages in mania because those are the only ones I like. They're all entirely different skillsets required from the main games, and mostly I don't want to engage with them.
Apparently some people say Mania has shitty bosses because you can't kill them in 5 seconds but really the only boss I don't like is Heavy Gunner and Hydrocity act 2 because they do go on a little long, other than that I didn't see much of a problem.
a move where by pressing jump again after jumping, Sonic will do an attack that extends his hitbox size for a split second. It's great for reaching bosses easier or taking care of deadlier enemies like orbinaut.
It also makes Sonic invulnerable for a second.
>Nightmare Mode
Beating the Death Egg Robot in Sonic 2 playing as Knuckles.
Heavy Gunner and Hydrocity Act 2 are definitely the worst offenders. But Hydro Act 1 still annoys me because it's a cute little gimmick the first time you play the game but then it's really boring every subsequent playthrough. Press Garden Act 1 boss is also pretty stupid but at least that one you can cheese with Super forms.
You think so? I think that just involves waiting for openings more. Sonic can attack death egg robot even while he's walking as long as he minds the placement of the arms. Knuckles can't do that so the best he can do is wait for whenever he lands.
Eh, can't win em all I suppose.
>tfw you used to be able to skip Heavy Gunner by flying with Tails but they patched it
That's the only thing I don't like about the Mania devs, they're not very speedrun friendly.
No Sonic game has worse special stages than the Advance series. Just getting to them is a fucking nightmare.
>tfw I still remember when you could slope hop for instant max speed
Still funny how Tails was never able to do that for some reason
Not him, but it's a total bullshit fight no matter your character. I've only beaten it once in my life, because I simply cannot figure out when it's safe to attack. You can still get hit by the robot arm in the background, so it's literally nothing but trial and error to see when you can safely hit him. I remember he does have one perfectly safe opening, but that's only after he flies up and drops down, so going with that would take like ten minutes.
Hate to rant, but this single fucking boss takes a 3/10 difficulty game up to about 8, and it's bullshit.
Knuckles also doesn't get knocked back after damaging him so you have to manually steer away after hitting him or you'll fall through his body and take damage.
I am glad they fixed the slope physics, you used to be able to jump when rolling down slopes and you would just get a speed boost like you were stuck to the slope but now you jump away from it properly. Early speedruns of Mania were full of people doing that trick.
There is a difficulty spike but it's still not that bad. If you're not confident enough to hit him while he's walking you can still play it safe and wait for him to drop.
There's also a bug that sometimes happens where Sonic will just flat out phase through his body when he's landing and die.
Either way yeah it's a pretty rough fight when you get down to it on a design standpoint. Sonic 1's final zone wasn't really as much of an offender because all you did was dodge homing sparks and try to hit robotnik in the right piston, and it's mostly a crusher boss so rings wouldn't have mattered anyway. Sonic 3 & Knuckles does take away your rings if you die on your first attempt but if you know how the insta-shield works it's not 'that' bad. And Mania lets you get rings before the fight at the very least. So really Sonic 2 is the roughest one here, making you go through a 2 boss gauntlet with the latter having 12 hits with no rings at all and limited lives and continues. It may not seem like much to people who've played Sonic 2 for years like me, but to the first time player, it's gonna be hell.
He buckles down when he lands, hit him then and hold left on contact to bounce away or you might land on him afterwards and die
You can also get some (mostly) free hits on him at the beginning if you run behind him before he's active
There you go, it's pretty easy if you're patient
>oh how much you've grown, my boy
fuck every single sonic special stage, fuck you especially Advance 1
Third will always be the best, fight me.
I like them all in their own way, but yeah
Based friend, you still hang around with him?
i found out about a month ago that you can instashield hit the launch base act 2 boss when he's going left/right in the ground
>tfw so good at sonic I can get all emeralds by the end of emerald hill in Sonic 2
>All chaos emeralds by Hydrocity Act 2 and Super Emeralds by Mushroom Hill act 2 in Sonic 3
>All Emeralds by Chemical Plant act 1 in Mania
Dunno what people are talking about, autism apparently makes you better at vidya.
Oh Big Arm? Yeah, insta-shield works wonders on that bastard.
youtu.be
Although I have since grown to prefer the 1-2-Mania style sprite, it's still a cool sprite.
Unless you are playing in some fucked Sega Genesis collection with bad emulation, you shouldnt have issues getting the emeralds. Now, perfect every single one? That I can understand, specially that 3rd or 4th stage(the yellow/blue one) in &Knuckles part
The perspective can still be annoying. If you time things right it can be pretty easy replaying them, since they wave around the same patterns.
I played Sonic & Knuckles first and I loved that shit more than 3(which i played later on Jam), but over the years I started enjoying S3's part more. Especially Marble Garden and Carnival Night stages. The S3's ost with MJ is just unique
The only one in Mania that annoyed me was that labyrinth one because how boring it is, a complete chore to do. Every new Spheres in Mania are reused ideas from Blue Spheres(lock-on), some levels are the same.
American manual/instructions fucked us on that one man. The jp title is "W Spin Attack", "Wind Attack" or "Twin-Spin Attack", either way no mention of 'Shield'.
Once you start to use that thing offensively and to dodge attacks it's the most useful technique ever in a sonic game. Arguably too useful.
Speaking of bugs, is getting stuck in walls an AIR thing? It's happened to me 3 times, once in Hydrocity and twice in Launch Base (I could escape the wall in Hydro, not in Launch, got stuck in the same spot twice lmao)
Except that the insta-shield also makes you temporarily invincible. I don't have it on hand, but there is a gif of Sonic falling through an obstacle in Flying Battery, he does the insta-shield, and just falls through it harmlessly. It isn't just a hitbox extender.
Not sure if I've run into that issue but sometimes Sonic will get stuck at the top of a water slide loop in hydrocity till his rolling momentum runs out. I've also noticed Sonic 3 has a problem of getting caught on slopes or ramps if you're going too fast. Kinda wish we had the retro engine to fix that, but oh well.
That could happen in the original too. The manual even called them "Dr. Robotnik's diabolical speed traps"
But just in case, download the April 23rd update if you haven't already, it has a bunch of bugfixes
This is probably really autistic to bring up, but part of me hopes there's an option to turn off the 1 up sound in a future whitehead game. Cause when you're really good at sonic, hearing that jingle interrupt the awesome music all the time is a bit annoying.
>can clear S3K Blue Sphere boards in my sleep
>can barely get three emeralds in S2 half-pipe
Not sure how to feel about this.
>not permanently switching to playing Encore Mode when booting up Mania where you never even hear the 1up jingle
Aw, c'mon. You only have to hear it three times a level once you collect all the rings :^)
Funny, I knew that for awhile but just found out a month ago Tails and Knuckles can't hit him down there even if they're super
if any sonic retro fags wanna report this bug to the dev, I found one in hydrocity where the drowning music would continue to play after getting a bubble so I wasn't sure if it worked or not and the regular music was cutting in and out as well
It's because the S3&K bonus stages were actually designed to be beaten. The Sonic 2 ones were just to piss you off
This pic gives me a really good feeling like looking at a gamefan magazine back in 1994
you forgot that I also know where 1 up boxes are.
Did you have Tails with you? I think the music plays of he drowns too.
Do you actually go out of your way for them? That seems counterproductive.
>Dr. Robotnik has created many diabolical traps which take advantage of Sonic's ultra-fast speed. Watch out for traps that Sonic cannot escape. If you fall into the wrong trap, you might have to reset the game (by pressing the RESET button) and start again at the beginning of the Zone you were last in. When Sonic is flashing (after being hit) don't let him travel too quickly.
Ahahaha holy fuck
Are there any other games that do this? I know there was that one JRPG I think that had a gamebreaking bug that was refered to in the manual as some sorcerer magic or something
just sonic
I mean if it's right there, sure.
Dunno then
Most of them are specifically off of the beaten path, though. I'd rather go fast.
In A.I.R., how come there's no music for the running shoes?
I do go fast tho. guess that's a sign that I've played the game too many times.
Probably just me like I said, I think I might be spoiled by fanhacks that just replace it with that sound you hear at the end of the score tally, not like it was ever a gamebreaker for me anyway.
There never was running music, dipshit.
He means why the music doesn't speed up like in the original. My guess is the engine he's using made it hard to do but he has said that's one of the things he's hoping to add in a future patch.
the mania versions are so much harder than the originals. That was totally unexpected.
That was always easy for me.
t. F-Zero pro
>He means why the music doesn't speed up like in the original.
Oh, I haven't played it. That does sound like a retarded oversight.
I consider myself a Blue Sphere master, who put dozens of hours into Sonic 1 linked with Knuckles. There are two stages in Mania that I simply cannot fucking beat. It's masochistic.
Finally somebody who shares the pain
I eventually got gud at them but they shold should have been more merciful. And not so rare, fuck
>sonic 1 linked with knuckles
>he doesn't know there is a secret game in which you can play hundreds of Blue Sphere stages
Leave this thread before you embarrass yourself further.
Speaking of that, is that mode in AIR?
Nope, yet another thing that is planned to be added.
But... even if you could play the emerald stages, Sonic 1 was something completely different. It was this rotating pachinko shit.
>he really doesn't know
info.sonicretro.org
You're literally too stupid/young to realize that there was a secret game.
I honestly never did. Welp.
Go back to playing zoomer games, shitter.
>welp
Ah, I see the problem. You're a redditor. You can go back at any time.
Not him but I must be living under a rock, how many different things are reddit at this point? Man.
How else are they gonna keep you from getting the true ending during your rental period?
The second you complain about the NPC is the second you realized that you are one.
oh
If you need help transitioning from an NPC to an actual fucking human being, just ask.
Holy shit!
It doesn't have quite as much potential as it does in Mania, but at least it's there I suppose.
You must be just a total bell end poser. No idea where someone like you even comes from.
>total bell end poser
What did he mean by this?
You're too young to know what a bell end is?
No, I'm not a total fucking British cuckold.
decent thread.
wait a second, i think i've seen this episode before
anyone have the pic where an NPC is transformed into wojak?
i fucking hate the special stages in cd. the shitty framerate and awful hitboxes make them fucking unplayable on an actual sega cd
huh? They are way harder because they increased the frame rate from 15 to 60. You could be really sloppy in the original and still hit them.
>increased the frame rate from 15 to 60
This is so fucking retarded that I need to tell you that the jews murdered JFK, bombed the USS Liberty, and bombed the Twin Towers.
They're so easy to hit in the remaster that I can get all of the time stones before Wacky Workbench and sail through the rest of the game. CD's difficulty and design were fucking broken, and the Taxman port honestly made it much easier to break as a result.
