It's a pretty recent thing. Persona didn't really become super popular until P5. Don't get me wrong P4 was very popular amongst JRPG and anime fans but the series still wasn't really known amongst mainstream audiences. At the same time with FF13 and FF15 fans have been pretty disappointed. Even the FF7 remake which people have been waiting forever for is getting met with a lot of skepticism rather than pure hype due to the action based combat (which could be good but it was awful in FF15) and the fact the game is apparently episodic. Final Fantasy could still make a come back but I think that people have lost faith in Square Enix to release a good game. If FF7 Remake or FF16 are amazing then I'm sure the love for the series will return the same way it has for Resident Evil recently with RE7 and REmake 2.
