Video game development sucks and is largely a passion project. If you had the skills and experience you can move onto any number of easier and better payed positions. Not very many stay on, especially once they have kids and get burned out.
It's doesnt have to be this way so good on them for doing something but most game devs at large studios are suckers. Its a great place to start out for a few years to learn the ropes but i would never recommend sticking around.

The comparable value of products has also massively increased, meaning the money you make is actually more valuable for general spending than it was 50 years ago.
The only real industry where this isn't the case is in post-secondary education, which is overall busted to shit but that's a different discussion.
