The choices for Buddy were to be trapped with Brad and have at least a loving dad who doesn't wanna be called dad who at most gets pissed you try to fuck yourself over by going out into a world that is against you. The other choice? Getting turned into a sex slave in a going to fail attempt to "keep humanity alive" while it's obvious like 99% if not all of them are just there to get their dick wet. Rando can barely control his men they attack brad as soon as he leaves.

Can someone explain to me why Yea Forums adores this game so much?

I ask because I've finally started playing LISA the Painful after seeing it constantly praised on Yea Forums. And unfortunately, it just isn't a good game.

The problem with Lisa is the same problem that every single one of these Earthbound-inspired indie rpgs suffers from, and indeed, Earthbound itself. They want to be these deep, introspective, character-driven narrative experiences, but they attempt to do that by using completely generic RPG mechanics designed around high-fantasy dungeon crawling (and no, replacing "MP" with "PP" or "SP" doesn't make them any less generic). My eyes just glaze over when I see the complete disconnect between story and gameplay.

I can't stress enough how mindnumbingly boring the experience of playing Lisa is. The environments look like Mario worlds, except with less detail than even the NES version of Super Mario Bros. They are so sterile and boring to look at. The combat might just take the prize for the most boring menu-driven battle system I've ever played. I don't even think I've ever fought a battle that involved more than a single enemy. Even on Painful mode, the encounters are a complete cake walk and all you have to do is mindlessly button mash the main's characters silly combo move. The writing commits the sin of being obnoxiously heavy-handed, with constant sappy flashbacks and montages, while being almost completely devoid of any actual characterization or any sort of compelling story hook.

I've only played it for a few hours, and I really wanted to give this game a chance, but it's such a chore that I can't image how people can stomach 10+ hours (or however long it takes to complete) of this crap.

Lisa the Painful indeed. That is one fitting title, though I imagine not for the reasons the developers intended.

He did all of the wrong things for all of the right reasons. He should have never committed mass-murder, he should have never killed his friends, and he should have let Buddy have a choice in the matter. He wanted only the best for her, and he already knew what happened if he didn't put his foot down and fight for what he believed in, but he wasn't thinking rationally or fairly.

Buzzo mentions other women. It's likely Olathe is the only place that the flash happened in. Yaddo's pills and influence wouldn't be world wide considering they where a top secret military thing.

You're not wrong, Mr. pasta. LISA is a very amateur game. Even the developer has gone on record saying he thinks the combat sucks. But for me it was just immediately compelling. I wanted to keep going, to see what insanity was around the corner, to see just how far the player character could fall. I loved it's complete apathy, the sheer unforgiving and unrelenting RNG, and how it played into the themes of the world. I loved that party members are glorified average joes, and how the game is essentially a desert road trip with a bunch of useless wasted fucks. It's hilarious. But it's not for everyone. You either like it or you don't.

Hopeful and Pointless were way, way better than they had any right being. I have never played a fangame I liked just as much as the real game (there were points where I liked them even more than Painful at times) and the fact that Hopeful is still getting updated is a blessing. This series is magical.

It's mostly because Marty, being the unforgivable monster that he is, attempted to rectify his terrible position and was clearly horribly affected by Lisa after the fact too. Lisa, however, cursed Brad for being too weak to save her and haunted his nightmares all the way to the end, and Buzzo was manipulated into doing terrible things just to try and gain Lisa's affection. I'd say that in the grand scheme of things, all of these once-innocent people were turned to madness and horror because of Lisa's machinations, but it pretty much all centers around Marty's abuses. In a theoretical event that Brad took Lisa and ran away with her, or tried to fight Marty and got beaten for it, or if Bernard tried to fight Marty to protect Lisa, or fucking ANYTHING ELSE, the story may have been different. It's a perfect storm that was influenced by two peoples' decisions.

There's also the implication that Brad was forced by Marty to partake in raping and abusing Lisa as well, which helped build up this twisted image of Brad in Lisa's head as him being a cruel and passive enabler if not just as bad as her father, which carried over to why Buzzo wanted to take all his grief and anger out on him later in life.

So it's hard for me to blame Brad or Lisa for the way that things turned out, or forgive Marty for anything just because he hid out in a cave a few decades later with the claim that he changed.

I honestly can't tell if I like this design or the original more. Both of them are excellent for what they want to be, but the original looks more like a horrific Joy Mutant that would be even more fucked up screaming "ANYBODY! PLEASE! Many, many things you enjoy were almost certainly made by someone who you disagree with/hates you.

I've only played the Pointless, which has a lot of clear effort and talent put into it, but it's locked into an obligatory hard mode which I find needlessly frustrating if you're going in blind. I got several hours out of it but the story isn't finished yet last time I checked.

It's basically Lisa the Painful's combat but built around two established party members. A damage-dealer and a support.

Pointless is pretty good, but short. It's also harder than painful, and I was almost always low on shit. You only get two party members though, but one of them has the dial system or whatever it was called where you enter the combo letters to do the combo. It feels closer to the joyful rather than the pointless, honestly.

The disconnect comes from how contrived the scripted choices are. Instead of having agency as a player, your character just gets knocked out in a cutscene and presented with two arbitrary choices.
