I think it's that Joseph only likes a very select few kinds of stories. Between his novels and the game stories he's praised, I think his interests include:

>fantasy
>grounded with consistent logic and rules
>no symbols, all literal
>mostly dialogue-driven
Which is fine on its own, but holy shit anything that falls out of those parameters is like nonsense to him. He loves the story of SOMA because it's got like two characters who just talk about what's going on in a sci fi world. But he hates the story of Dragon's Dogma because it's about less explicable things like God and requires more interpretation to understand on a literal level.
He'll write book after book about dragons and wizards and magic and talk about wands and robes for several pages, but Dark Souls, a game where the story is subtly told and is primarily about the themes rather than the literal events, he claims has no story at all.

Silent Hill 2 is like the absolute opposite of what he likes in stories, being that it's all symbolism and emotion, and what literally happens is fairly vague on a regular basis. And again, it's fine to have preferences, but he literally can't even attempt understand what's happening without a narrator that explains it in hard detail.

The premise of 'the environment is a twisted reflection of your unresolved trauma' is a common trope for a psychological horror story. The problem is that SH2's execution of that premise is shallow and stupid.. "OH, look, the monsters are sexy nurses and represent James' sexual urges". This is kinder-garten levels of symbolism.

Furthermore, "You fight creepy monsters" as a way to represent your inner demons is both unimaginative and also ludonarratively dissonant, since fighting monsters has nothing to do with dealing with guilt and personal responsibility, not even on an abstract level. You fight creepy monsters in EVERY video game.

I watch them to find out whether games are good or not. I already pirate games nearly daily to try out but there just isn't enough time to try everything for long enough to see if it's really good.

The majority of self-proclaimed Youtube "analysts" do not analyze their content: they summarize it. I want you to watch one, while actively paying attention to what proportion of their talking is any form of original, personal opinion, interpretation, corollary, anecdote, or comparison- and on the other hand, how much is simply a factual description of how the game works- and, even more often, a literal beat-for-beat, in-order retelling of the game's story/events. You will find that it is at best 90% the latter. People who like these "analysts" like them because they, the audience, do not play video games but they feel involved by listening to someone else drone out a bullet point list about some games. Many of the Youtubers know this and will acknowledge it in their spoiler warning.

Some user posted the salt factory a few weeks back and I enjoyed his Oblivion and Morrowind videos immensely.

I don't know if he specifically counts because I don't think he's done much direct game reviews or videos so much as discussing systems on a general level but I really like Critpoints/Evilagram's stuff, a lot is interesting and at times vindicating since it's often things I've been thinking about. I also enjoy Shammy and Turbobutton.

That would be because while academic literature assumes the reader has already read whatever the discussed material is, games criticism is different. It's a youtube video, not an academic paper. There's no reason to believe the audience is anymore than mouthbreathing children. So summary is necessary unless you're going for a super niche audience who have already played every game you're discussing.
