good system
trash story

>start game
>system already broken
>good system

I found its system fun af, a broken mess but really fun.
Call me an autist but I enjoyed sailing through endless menus rather than actually fighting

The story is actually pretty good right up until the time compression crap.
If it was just the evil sorceress trying to rape the magic juice out of rinoa to revive and dominate the world again it would be pretty standard and fine

Add in the time compression and the monsters coming from the moon is a bit pointless as well as the whole thing with galbaldia

>Square Skipped FF8 when they port the other FF games recently
Wow how can a company be so based?

Attached: 1544993277552.jpg (540x370, 31K)

Other way around. People tend to not understand the story and think shit happens randomly, which isn't the case at all.

>whole thing with galbaldia
You mean Ultimecia possesssing Edea and taking control of the Galbadian military to invade countries around the world in order to find Ellone and use her powers to cast her time compression spell? Yeah, wow, that sure was pointless. It was only one of the main aspects of the story.

X is the first trash game in the series.

Trash system, you can literally finish the game without levelling the characters up since the bosses adapts their stats on the current party levels.

but still better than FFXV in every way.

>People tend to not understand the story and think shit happens randomly
to be fair, Squall falling for Rinoa feels random as fuck

Nah, that's the moment Squall shows who he really is. Losing Ellone and Quistis is what made him the way that he was because he didn't have the power to prevent losing them. When Rinoa goes into a coma, he does everything in his power to prevent losing someone close to him again. It's the turning point of the his character.

>losing someone close to him

and yet it didn't feel like he got close to her at all

Junction as a system is broken as fuck, grinding for Draws feels awful, and tying your spells to your stat-boosting items is the worst thing they ever thought of and I wonder if they actually met an RPG player in real life. We hoard consumables all the way up to 99, do they really think we would enjoy to be forced to use our "gear" to cast shit?

People defend Kingdom Hearts' story by saying the same way. The story is not clever and it's not deep, it's just convoluted and unfocused as shit.

She was always loving towards him. If you fuck up the song choice at the concert, you miss out on an actual bonding scene. Also, the central theme of FF8 is destiny. Laguna's first true love was Rinoa's mother, Julia. They could never be together and ended up married and having children with other people. Squall and Rinoa find the love that the two of them couldn't have.

Speaking of; Laguna's a real piece of shit. He doesn't bother returning to Raine after saving Ellone, turning Squall into an orphan who has to live a life of harsh military training which then is the direct cause of Ultimecia's mental breakdown and desire to compress time.

>The story is not clever and it's not deep, it's just convoluted and unfocused as shit.
Nope, you just lack the mental capacity to retain plot points for the duration of the game. The game is perfectly as it is. It's not their fault that the vast majority of western players don't have the ability to understand it.

>grinding for Draws feels awfu
imagine being too much of a brainlet for card/item mod

>She was always loving towards him.
and he kept on pushing her away

>If you fuck up the song choice at the concert, you miss out on an actual bonding scene.
I really didn't care about that minigame so I fucked it up on purpose.

>and he kept on pushing her away
Until he's seemingly going to lose her, at which point he snaps out of it. He has a decent character arc.

>at which point he snaps out of it

and that is felt random as fuck to me.

Souns like a personal problem, brah. Pretty much in line with the character after you hear the full story about his childhood.

>you just don't get it lol
No you dumb fuck, all there is to understand is that the writers decided to pull two of the most retarded, lazy plot points that could be added to a story ("time travel" and "mind control"), so they could just start being lazy on writing and just throw literally anything in there and it would work out because those two could explain anything. It's the same lazy writing that Nomura uses for KH, just throw in time travel and now it's easy to justify anything in your story without actually having to write. And even THEN FF8's writers fucks up by dropping plot points halfway through, like the entirety of Seifer's character.

Ah yes, because solving one of the game's problems by introducing a mechanic that breaks the game in half is such GREAT game design. Look at how much engaging gameplay can be done by going into a shop three hours in, buying 100s of an item and steamrolling half of the game with impunity!

thats some nice goalpost moving desu.

Feel free to point out what you think is wrong with story, because it sounds like you just don't get it at all, fampai. Time travel was never just "thrown in" and has been hinted at from the start of the game. Cid literally tells Squall outright that he's destined to defeat the future sorceress and promptly gives him command of the entirety of SeeD, and that's not even the halfway point of the game.

>Feel free to point out what you think is wrong with story
he did but you just dismissed his arguments in the same post with
>you just don't get it at all

I said that grinding for Draws feels awful. You gave an alternative. I explained that said alternative is shit game design AND feels awful. Maybe stop trying to be retarded before aiming for the goal.

The only thing FF8 did better than KH was having hindsight on the fact that they knew they were going to write a shit story from the beginning instead of throwing in halfway through. And by "better", I mean worse.

Nope, "lazy plot points" isn't an argument without context or specifics. FF8 haters are notorious for not getting it and coming up with mental gymnastics about why something doesn't make sense.

>Nope, "lazy plot points" isn't an argument without context or specifics.
Considering you gave no specifics on "good writing" either, I'll go with the specific fact that you're full of shit.

I'll explain it to you when you present an argument with specifics that isn't just screeching. I'll explain it to you. Chances are, you're a brainlet, but let's see.

you explained something completely unrelated lmao eat shit
stop replying to me

Imagine still parroting that fucktard spoony in 2019

I already said the fact that you can EXPLAIN said plot point but that doesn't makes it GOOD, it makes it SHIT THAT HAS BEEN PLANNED AHEAD.
I don't want you to explain the plot points, I want you to point out out why spacefaring, time travelling, mind controlling witches trying to cast spells to compress time with a pointless romance thrown into the mix is a good story.

Just because someone says something similar to that guy doesn't make them a parrot

I want you to explain why it isn't instead of just saying "muh time travel". Every aspect of the game is fully explained and comes full circle by the end of the game. Just because you don't like magic and technology meshing doesn't make something bad. In fact, Ultimecia uses technology based on Ellone to transfer her consciousness into the past to possess Edea because she doesn't have physical time traveling capabilities, and is only able to do so at the end of the game when time decompresses.

You can't just say "this game has this element so it's shit" without an context or specifics, dumb dumb.

They lost the game data. Which is strange, because people rip that shit with rims all the time: a dedicated team could rebuild it with those assets, surely.

>I want you to explain why it isn't instead of just saying "muh time travel".

>Needlessly complex and unfocused, the romance is unnecessary, the rivalry with Seifer is unnecessary, most of the Laguna content is unnecessary, Edea is mostly unnecessary, hell half of the story is pointless fat that could be cut to make a more coherent story.
>Both time travel and mind control are cop-outs for easy storytelling, especially when most of the explanation to how it works is done via "it's magic 'n shit" handwave, but hey, they at least they replace "magic" with "technology" sometimes, so hey, that makes it better, right? (spoilers: it doesn't)
>Ultimecia, as a character, is complete and utter shit. Her entire character begins and ends with "muh destiny" and that's it, that's the main villain of your 60 hour game.
>Just plain retarded plot points. The orphanage? The orphanage.

8's plot is deeper than any FF that came after it. You have to pay attention to understand how everything connects, unlike X, and XIII, and XV.

I'l agree that the writing itself wasn't very good, but there was nothing wrong with the plot. I think the love story between Squall and Rinoa is hindered by the relatively bad writing, and that's why a lot of people think it doesn't feel natural.

>You have to pay attention to understand how everything connects, unlike X, and XIII, and XV.

to be fair with XV's plot, most of it is told in DLCs, multiplayer DLC, Movie, anime, and novels.

opposite

True, but I blame modern gaming conventions for that rather than the game itself.

Well, now you've actually proven that you're one of the aforementioned brainlets.
>it's not overly complex at all, it just requires you to be able to retain information throughout the game
>with destiny as its main theme, squall and rinoa finding the love together their parents never could is fitting and is also a major turning point for squall
>the seifer rivalry has roots all the way back to the orphanage and continues all the way throughout the game, which is something ultimecia takes advantage of
>laguna's story is extremely important and further establish squall's origin story as well as major worldbuilding around esthar, as well as showcasing ellone's abilities, which is a major plot point; half the story being pointless isn't specific enough
>time travel is the main component of the story, and mind control is ultimecia's only tool to achieve her goals and at no point was something just not explained or stated to be "magic 'n shit", and magic/technology go hand in hand in the setting
>ultimecia's not just "muh destiny", she's seeking answers in the past after being hunted by seed her whole life for reasons unknown, and she's completely lost her mind and sees her only salvation in basically compressing and stopping all of time
Now, the orphanage is the biggest giveaway that you're a dumb dumb.
>at the end of the game, edea follows ultimecia into the past and watches her die, then accidentally tells a young edea about SeeD and Garden before returning to the time anomaly
>edea recognizes squall as the child at her orphanage and she and cid form garden to prepare for the future sorceress
>cid specifically assigns squall, quistis, zell, selphie and ivine to the same squad and gives squall full command of SeeD because he knows that the children at the old orphanage will be instrumental in defeating ultimecia, with squall being the key component
Brainlet.

In other words, it's a piece of shit. Remember the patch notes of the early days?
>added cutscenes
>deeper combat
Hilarious.

>Remember the patch notes of the early days?
no.

I stopped playing XV (due to getting the easy Platinum) before the big patches came.

everything after FF7 is trash, honestly FF8 deserved the remake treatment more since it was rushed out the door and they lost the source code
Literally make Junction less retarded, focus on SeeD and drop the romance sub plot and its fixed

Attached: 1534922182836.jpg (1060x1060, 181K)

Music is catchy and Squall is my boy

>everything after FF7 is trash
>when FF9 exists
oh boy

>Romance subplot
But look at the logo. Wasn't the biggest point of the game supposed to be a love story.

Everything after 7 isn't overrated as Hell.

ftfy

you do realize that a broken system makes it really easy to tailor the gameplay to your personal standards, right? You can make the game impossibly difficult by grinding but not junctioning if you are into that, or you can bust the game over your knee right at the start if you like to overpower shit, or you can grind along at a pace that feels proper to the games difficulty curve by not junctioning overpowered shit too fast.

Or you know, you could continue to bitch and moan like a retard at a game that happens to be the absolute most replayable in the entire franchise, because of said system and how immaculately paced the game as a whole is.

Level scaling
Forced to waste time drawing magic on enemies for hours
Stats are tied to Junction
Cant stat up without leveling GFs
Punished for leveling

Better than ANY modern final fantasy no contest LMFAO!

9 is fun, though later part story is usual FF tier trash

I remember refusing to play 12 when i heard it wasnt turn based, turned out to be a great game. Well main character sucked but rest was good.

Would the profits be worth the cost though? Because they would have to still remake assets from scratch for higher resolutions that the original was not designed to support.

Whatever

>Forced to waste time drawing magic on enemies for hours

I can't believe people still think this is a thing.

The only things I hate are Rinoa, how bland the party feels, and the whole sorceress stuff. The world and music are great. I like the battle system. It has the best summon animations. I really like the idea of the Gardens and seeds but I wish there had been a better purpose for why they exist. Something better than just fighting some future sorceress. Triple Triad and collecting the cards are fun. If I just turn off my brain whenever Rinoa shows up, I end up enjoying the game a lot.

>The story is actually pretty good right up until the time compression crap.
>Shared orphanage amnesia
>Good

Just install this mod and call it a day.
forums.qhimm.com/index.php?topic=18404.0
>uncaps how many spells you can draw, up to 100 based on your magic stat
>rebalances level scaling and bosses are static
>rebalances triple triad and refinement as well as changing ultimate weapon crafting requirements to prevent you from getting lionheart on disc 1 with no effort
>removes incentive to avoid leveling up early on by removing stat-up abilities from gfs
>adds actual rewards for some of the retarded sidequests that lead to jack shit as well as adding new optional boss encounters
Boom, most of the horrid gameplay of the original fixed.

>9 and 10
>not the most overrated turds people won't shut up about along with 7

Like the rest of the series

See the last part of

I'll give you X. I personally think that game is only good for one playthrough. IX though? IX is actually fantastic and deserves every bit of praise it gets.

IX is.... great.... when the ..... random........... battles........... finally............ load............ shame.........there ...........are so................ many............ times you ............... have...........to..................................wait.............

I hate the music in this game. It's so dishonest and pretentious.

Sure
You can play cards for hours instead for items to break down into magic

9 is not overrated, and 10 is rarely considered the best or even top 3 so i don't know what you're on about

X is good. The setting and aesthetic is fantastic, and the story does have some good buildup and payoff.

The gameplay is just repetitive as fuck because you have to switch in and use every single character in your party for them to get AP. Most of combat is spent swapping people out and skipping a turn with them, and every standard enemy can basically be killed by certain characters in one hit and removes any and all variety, since every enemy is just a reskinned archetype with the same strategy.

Did Cid know GFs kill memories before anyone else?
How did he know that?
Did he know they would target the specific memories that pertain to them knowing Edea?
Why did he let Vincent go to a different Garden and keep his memories then?

Ff9 is the most slow lackluster FF game I've played, it's not shit but it's not the greatest thing ever made

Most of the character designs are ridiculous, and not in the good way. Whoever thought Tidus' outfit was a good idea was on something.

On top of everything you said, there's no replay value. That's why I said it's only good for one playthrough.

Or you can learn GF abilities naturally over the course of the game that let you transform the hundreds of items you get into the spells you need. There really is no grinding required.

Slow doesn't necessarily make it bad. It's one of my favorites despite that.

The 3 most brought up FFs in any scenario are 6, 7 and 10. The fuck are you on about?

9 gets called overrated cause it has to do with people considering it the ""Last real FF game"" and 10 is just as divisive as FF8 not really overrated but it either gets called ''last good FF game'' or ''killed the series''

It's not slow as in pacing, it's unresponsive and clunky as fuck to play, which is an impressive feat when you're making a menu-based ATB game. The battles take forever to load in and out, your commands take forever to execute at the best of times. It's incredibly painful.

Again, that's subjective. I agree with everything you said but none of it ever hindered my enjoyment of the game.

Balamb is the only Garden that uses GFs, and they are aware of the memory/soul consuming side effect of extensive use. NORGs henchmen push their agenda by saying it's just propaganda. They seemingly suck the wearer dry in exchange for power, which Cid NEEDS Squall and Co to have in order to fight Ultimecia. As for Irvine, Galbadia Garden's the only Garden that trains students in the use of firearms, and he's still assigned to Squall's group as a designated sniper when Edea reveals herself.

SeeD graduation requires actual GF use and the field exam takes place in Balamb for that reason. Irvine simply never used one. It's not that they want to brainwash their students. Also, Selphie's a student at Trabia Garden who had to transfer to Balamb in order to graduate. She junctioned a GF when she was a child and gradually lost all her memories despite not growing up with them the way Squall, Seifer, Zell and Quistis did.

It's not like Cid wants them to be brainwashed. It's just the price of power, and they don't want to derail their mission by alarming their students of it since Ultimecia will literally destroy all of existence if they're too weak to kill her. They used GFs for over 12 years at Balamb Garden, so the symptoms were likely reported by Dr. Kadowaki.

How the fuck is the slugishness of the game's engine subjective? Whether it hindered your enjoyment or not is unrelated, the state of the game's code is objective fact.

Ricky here from /shmupg/, stop playing your jarpig garbage and visit us at

We're talking about our enjoyment of the game and whether it's overrated or not. Bad coding isn't relevant. And as visually amazing as that game is, it was probably the best the Playstation could do. In that case, I'd blame the system and not the game.

lolnothx nerd

Was pretty lucky Vincent didn't bother to tell anyone about growing up together even after he pussies out from murdering her and Squall asks why he couldn't take the shot, huh?

not everyone is good at card games

It wouldn't affect shit, and he does try hinting that they know each other throughout the game. He just assumes they forgot about him and moved on with their lives, since he doesn't know about the effects of GFs himself.

I've played through it without touching the card game several times and still always had several ways to collect spells.

>no counter arguments just "brainlet"

lol

Best music
Best world
Best airship
Best boy

>9 is fun, though later part story is usual FF tier trash
how is it trash

Trolling and deflection attempts won't work, brah.

If I remeber correctly I think they were conflicted with having a love story be the main focus and it being focused on the military stuff at SeeD
It didn't bother me personally but like most things in this game and FF in general when it comes to story shit it needed more fleshing out. I wish this got a remake and they keep the God tier OST and refine the mechanics more cause I like this game but it's just a product of rushed development like Xenogears or Vagrant Story

says the guy who'se only rebuttal to complaints about VIII is "brainlet"

It could have been good. The battle system was trash though.

Not him but FF9 is a near-perfect game until somewhere into disc 2, and by the third disc it loses most of its charm.

You're the one choosing to ignore the rest of the post that flat out explains to you how stupid it is to think the orphanage reunion was random, shitposter-kun.

>it being focused on the military stuff at SeeD
I wish the focus had been fully on this.

the whole game is excellent

Shut up Michael.

Michael?

Is that some new boogeyman that Barry is using?

Barry is just as active on /vg/ as ever, so he likely came out of his cave to defend a shit game to the death.

As soon as you leave the Mist Continent the story starts to slip, side characters are entirely forgotten (RIP Freya) and the personal motivations that made the characters interesting are gradually replaced with more sweeping SAVE THE WORLD plots, culminating in an infamously retarded final boss fight.
And yes I understand that this was a love letter to previous entries, I get it.

the story never slips
you're literally just repeating it like a mantra
the personal motivations of the main 4 characters are maintained throughout the majority of the story
there's nothing retarded about necron as it pertains to the story he's basically just a typical "final boss after the final boss" trope

Still better than XII and XV kids, your FF age is garbage

You could, but not recommended since it severely handicaps you

>Still better than XII and XV kids, your FF age is garbage

true. All FFs after 10 are crap.

How did he lose quistis? She's with him since the beginning

Im still mad we will never get Versus in this lifetime, it was going to be a actual ARPG with full on KH combat and over the top Nomura writing minus the gay Disney shit and a sick ass Light and Dark themed world
but instead we get a massive blunder like 15

Attached: 1534029802605.gif (460x345, 492K)

Quistis replaces Ellone after she goes into hiding with the White SeeD. Squall refers to her as Quisty, and she's eventually adopted, leaving Squall alone at the orphanage with Seifer. It's why Squall is the way that he is. He doesn't allow anyone to get close because he's lost everyone he cares about and been hurt in the past. The prospect of losing Rinoa as well is what makes Squall open up and do everything he can to save her.

>everyone talking about the confusing plot of ff8 when it's actually confusing because squall is dead from disc 1 and disc 2-4 is his "purgatory" that his mind created so it will definitely have terrible writing thinking up a story from some emo tryhard

Attached: TKO4oaP.png (610x457, 580K)

>but instead we get a massive blunder like 15

thanks Tabata

I tried playing this game as a kid but had no idea how to beat it. Can someone link me to a guide on how to play, preferably making the battles piss-easy so I can breeze through it? Also

>tfw no GF

Attached: 1556935985638.jpg (673x428, 181K)

I can't remeber if it's Kitase or someone else who said if there was a 8 remake they would incorperate the Squall is dead theory cause they liked the idea so much

But it's not confusing at all and the main plot of the game is already hinted at before Squall even faces Edea at the end of the first disc. It's a stupid theory concocted by stupid people who fail to comprehend a story written for young teenagers.

>there's nothing retarded about necron
Everything in every way is retarded about Necron, and I love FF9. Stop fanboying so hard and accept that FF9 has flaws.

KH was trash when I played the first one and 15 years later it's trash still.
