He saw an opportunity in the market and is trying to take advantage of it.
If he fails a few games were delayed a year before they were available on Steam and a few hundred millions were wasted on buying exclusives and developing a client.
If he succeeds development of games has higher returns for everyone and especially for the indies.
Because they are the ones who pay the largest percentage to Valve.
And his company becomes several billion more valuable.

There is no opportunity in the market he is trying to take advantage of. He's just using ill-gotten gains obtained from manipulating children using gambling to force his way into the market.

Sweeney may be a complete piece of shit that represents many of the worst aspects of the video game industry, but everyone who hates Epic and their current plan is retarded, either you are a pirate and this makes no difference to you, or you use steam, and are hopefully sick of valve's shit and fail to understand that this may be just the thing needed to get valve actually making games again.

The service Valve provides cost much less then they charge developers.
It's a classic example of a market opportunity where you offer a product at a lower cost.
The problem with doing that in the market of digital distribution is that having many users means you get more games which leads to getting more users. It's a "the rich get richer" situation which has benefited Valve for a long time.
We have a similar situation with Microsoft and the world of OSs.
Which is why Tim has to use exclusives to get the ball rolling for his store before the market opportunity can be exploited.

Literally false, as evidenced by the fact almost no indies are on there. The majority of exclusives are Ubisoft games or other games from large publishers because those companies can absorb the costs which Epic is not absorbing like Valve is currently doing.
