A thief halfling who is less than stellar in combat but brings a BUNCH of utility can be helpful in a party.
They can detect traps, pick locks, steal shit undetected. Scout ahead and gather info on what's coming up or even help the party avoid combat all together. They can also be used for sensitive scenarios where being loud is probably the dumbest thing to do.
Sure a mage can open locks but magic is typically a VERY loud thing to do in most settings and will get you caught if you tried to use is quietly.
