I don't know why people complain about edge like they can't handle a story with dark themes or something. If that's the case, you need to consider playing something else to begin with. If we're talking about Apocalypse, they took "edge" overboard to the point where the story looked like an absolute joke. The plot for Apocalypse was written by different writers, and in no way should be accepted as the usual plot for a mainline title.

The gameplay in Apocalypse was very based. I'm thankful that they fixed the Smirk mechanic and introduced Affinities. I hope whatever combat enhancement they introduce in V is pleasing and adds more to the already great gameplay that we do have. Maybe another element like Tera since it meshed well with the other elements in Digital Devil Saga? Outside of that, I can't think of anything else. Then again that might be unnecessary when they finally made Hama/Mudo actual attacks as of Apocalypse.

So far I've gotten up to the barrier that suppresses summoning but I don't feel any overload of edge yet beside Dagda and him trying to get you to tell the Hunters to kiss your ass. Does it get worse?

This is another spinoff. Devil Survivor is kind of like a midpoint between SMT and Persona. There's the dark atmosphere, mythology, and tension of SMT titles, but the characters are downright anime trope flavored to the point where they could pass off as Persona characters. The second game even has a system called "Fate Links" which may as well be Social Links.

I used to think Desu 1 was superior to every nupersona game sans 5, but after playing every nupersona and Desu game, I can safely say in my opinion that neither series is better than the other. Both series are equally fun to play, even 3 although Tatarus is still a grind to enjoy in most parts of the game. Story-wise the persona games definitely have those parts where absolutely nothing happens, but those are also in Desu, in small parts on certain days. Really what can be said is that the Persona games just have more story, and more time to develop the characters which somehow have the same depth as Desu characters amazingly.

I know right? I'm a really big fan of heist movies and such, so actually playing through Persona 5 was probably one of the most dissapointing experiences I ever had playing a video game. Add in occult shit in a similar vein to P1-2 and slightly 3 with the Nyx cult stuff near the end and I think it probably would have ended up being my favorite game of all time.

I haven't played P1 but I have played enough of P2 to definitely say so, in terms of story. But it's honestly a pretty fun game, played on fast-forward in battle. The only downside is that the story has zero breaks between dungeons which ironically was a breath of fresh air at first coming from 3-5.

The ending doesn't change the overall experience. All of the new generation Persona titles have a heavy emphasis on the high school experience overall, and all 3 protagonists are equally the same bland self insert who goes around getting all the females. I don't even think there's a single female SL in Persona 3 where you don't romance the girl.

Very few of them are connected so start with what you're comfortable with. If you want more polished gameplay, try 4 or Apoc. If you want a good JRPG challenge where you punch God in the face go with 3. If you want an action game play Raidou, if strategy is your thing then play a DeSu game. There's something for everyone and most combat mechanics have the the same base across games so one game is enough to "get into" all of them.

The gameplay evolution from 1 to 2 is bad though. The focus on social links over everything else is a gameplay dead end. It completely trivializes the skill cracking process from day 1 and also makes combat easier in the mid and late game with the free demon transfers and free resistances. The writing is atrocious. The added skills from 1 to 2 don't meaningfully change gameplay, theyre mostly just x0% improvements over legacy skills, the EX auto skills are a particularly egregious example of this. By "reboot", I mean that if they were to make a new Devil Survivor, I hope it's not a 3 because I'm not interesting in seeing how they refine that formula, I'd prefer if they try something different while still being an SRPG.

You're using that as an extreme example, but the point is that Persona is just more often than not missing a lot of what makes an SMT. Persona 5 is the most egregious example where the characters just don't think for a vast majority of the story, the themes are absolute ass, the character development is lacking at best as aside from brosuke, Yoshida, and Iwai they don't really go anywhere. Then it's insulting when at the end they just throw in Yaldy and a few SMT themes together to pretend it was like this all along.

I'd probably say 4 is the worst offender because those characters barely even go through any real hardships and it does the same thing 5 did wit Yaldy but with Gas worker. I really don't know when Persona became so shit as using it's villains. 3's weren't super great ether but at least they where around for a good portion of the game and tied into the plot. 4 feels like they even forgot to put a villain in till the last second and just had Adachi fill the slot because he was the only named character left free to do it. 5's had some menace but they where all disposable clowns beyond Shido and Crow suffers the same problem. They don't interact enough with the player to really get a sense of rivalry and then just end load their sob stories.

Well see what bugs me about 4 is that, despite being a INVESTIGATION team there's never really any investigation. You may have to chat to NPCs once in a while but you never have to do any real footwork, look for clues and basically pull a Raidou. Like I'd even be satisfied if each boss room had a clue in it that lined up to a clear sus the more you put together. We didn't get that. We spent almost the whole game building our party and nothing else.
