I wish there was an option to keep the fall speed down, but let the AI be smarter still on higher difficulties.

For Compile Puyo:
Tsu -> SUN -> Yo~n at 125% speed -> BOX
For SEGA Puyo:
Fever -> Fever 2 -> Puyo Puyo! 15th Anniversary -> Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary

Tsu, SUN, Yo~n, Fever, Fever 2 (though unfinished), and 15th all have English translations. 15th's translation patch is for the DS version only, and 20th— while untranslated— is fairly easy to navigate and has a story mode translation online. Additionally, if you can find the file for it, the 3DS version of 20th has slightly improved animations.

Also please note that the eShop version of Puyo Puyo 20th isn't actually 20th, it's a shitty repackaged E3 demo. If you want the 3DS version of 20th, you need to find and download the .cia ripped from the actual physical copy.
Also, pretty much any Puyo game's menus are color coded, so if you have trouble translating them it shouldn't be too hard to just learn it.

Hard to say, if you're not very good, chances are you'll get matched against people that are a lot better since Puyo Puyo is such a niche series. It also doesn't have any singleplayer content like PPT aside from bot matches, but apparently it's going to get more training modes soon to improve your skills.

Hellfire is when you use a combo to send relatively high amounts of garbage in only a two or three chain. Pic related is a rough random example of what hellfire might look like. When the yellows pop, the red and blue clusters will both pop on the 2 chain at the same time for garbage that is roughly equal to a 4 chain.
