I never understood the desire to "identify with the main character" in video games. In movies and books this makes sense because its just an arbitrary collection of images of people doing things, that is until you have a protagonist who's exploits you can latch onto. But in a video game, by sheer virtue of controlling an object on screen, you are instantly experience transference. That is, you implant your sense of self and identity onto an outside object. Its actually a really good survival tactic that lets us make use of weapons and vehicles, but is the key thing that makes video games fun. And the strangest thing of all is that you don't even need to transfer onto an object. In the game Tetris, despite the fact you manipulate the blocks, no one identifies as the blocks. Its just you, the player, trying to make the game happen. The main topic I want to adress though is the idea that the protagonist of character based games (that is, anything from DMC to Warcraft, to the Last of Us) HAS to look like or otherwise relate to the player in some way. Utter horse shit. Videogames have this magical property of letting us identify AS characters, not just with. I would honestly prefer if I never saw a human being in a video game ever again, and we just played as machines or weird alien type things. It really doesn't fucking matter. I don't play video games to satisfy my sense of self, I play them because as a human, I find that action/reaction feedback loops stimulating. Thats literally all it is. One of my favorite protagonists is Samus, a fearless woman who is part alien and isolates herself from society. Am I that? No. Do I even want to be that? Not really. But I dot want to be Samus insofar as blasting the shit out of aliens and platforming like a crack head.

The problem isn't representation, on it's own representation is harmless. So far all we know is people feel a little better and display positive attitudes for a short time when they feel they are able to identify with the character, usually based around gender/race etc. If devs made a game with a fat, black, crippled dyke as a main character then that's their prerogative and more power too them I hope it's a fun game.
The problem is the people who knock everyone else over the head about it. These retards pissing and moaning about representation are acting like 1. it's a finite resource so if they don't get it now then they'll never get it and 2. the "other people" are a default so it's ok for them to be bolstered at the detriment of the "others". Like they demand reality be changed to fit their worldview as opposed to helping foster whatever change they believe should happen either through their own hard work or influence. How many times do we see these retarded twitter meltdowns over a character maybe not being a cock lord, canonically drowning in cum? It's indicative of the inability to recognize that other people have lives and experiences outside of their reality. They can't fathom why a game doesn't develop a game specifically pandering to their political and social views, because they can't fathom the idea that anyone else could come to any other conclusion about the world.
