Thoughts on anti-aliasing?

Thoughts on anti-aliasing?

Attached: fxaa.webm (1024x512, 2.96M)

First thing I turn off every time, couldn't care less.

I don't know why the fuck 8x MSAA gives Mankind Divided such a performance hit, it's insane

Anything but MSAA and solutions like it are shit.
Just do DSR and downscale from 4K.

I keep it off since i don't mind jaggies

That's not a very great webm for an example of anti aliasing. It's compressed to shit.

>Thoughts on anti-aliasing?
idk what it is or does

some things can look really shitty without anti aliasing because of Moiré patterns, but I mostly don't mind.

MSAA has always been extremely expensive, retard. You could just enable that in older games because they are less complex.

x4 MSAA is all I ever needed. FXAA a shit.

always off, 4k screen so no jags anyway

Not really, MSAA was moderately fast even on an ancient 8800 GTX because most engines were forward shaded.

MSAA is one of the most demanding AAs out there you stupid fucking hill-billy.

Strongly prefer supersampling to other methods for reducing aliasing.

No AA a day makes the low FPS go away.

>after all this time MD is still used to benchmark new gpus
its insane actually

mostly only needed in games with chain link fences

Unnecessary with 4k + supersampling

4x msaa and 4x sgsaa on every game

It looks like it sacrifices overall quality for smoothness. Good for fast-paced twitch shooters, but won't really have an effect on slower paced games.

There's many types of it, with differing results.
Game's art-style also has an effect on how AA comes across. Some games literally don't need any, while some others practically demand some form of AA to be even passable to look at.

I generally dig me some edge smoothing, but when nu-devs start to use literal smear-filter shit, like TXAA, to hide ugly dithering and specular noise, I get furious.

MSAA works by rendering the edges of polygons at 2-8x resolution.

The more polygons there is on the screen, the more work this means for the GPU.
Back in the 00s, when a single NPC was only a few thousand tris at best, and your playing resolution was around 1024x768, the impact wasn't as apparent.

But now, playing at widescreen, 1080p to 4K? With characters being up to HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of triangles, and the environment having another billion tris? Yeah, might just as well switch to full-blown SSAA and call it a day.

FXAA and TAA can go die in a fire

I can feel the vaseline

properly implemented HQ FXAA can be pretty nice.
TAA is just cancer.

I can occasionally stomach FXAA but I've yet to see find a game where TAA was worth the performance and didn't look like complete shit.

It's quite the opposite. You don't care about aliasing when you are busy dodging bullets, and a sharp image can make it easier to spot tiny objects, but when taking in the scenery, smoothing things out to hide artifacts matters.

comedy option: mlaa

Better than gen-0 FXAA or TAA-based trash.
MLAA later on evolved into SMAA, which is superb.

>tfw emulating N64 games at the native 240p + FXAA look almost identical to real-deal
It also looked great on Okami when emulating at native 480p.

Attached: OoT - P64 - 240p 400% FXAA.png (1283x963, 299K)

Best AA method and use both cpu and gpu extensively, but it look the best fxaa is garbage next to it.

Why would you even post that? That's a horrid example of what AA does.

To how's TXAA

TAA that takes 80fps in some games and still looks blurry as fuck

>native 240p
was it? i remember lots of games on the ps1 atleast, running at weird resolutions where some video plugins would stretch the window out to them, mostly 2d games using custom resolutions, where all n64 games 320x240 though?

>FXAA/Temporal AA
fucking kill yourself faggot
these aren't real AA solutions
stupid fucking developers add better AA options

TAA is NEVER an option and you're a legitimate retard if you use that option
FXAA is only useful at 3k or 4k

SMAA is good enough, I'd rather have jaggies than a blurry pile of shit on my screen. You can fiddle with other things too, to help shimmering like messing with LOD bias.

TAA is only ever decent when you have already shit hardware and play games under 720p

I usually upscale my games to 1440p and put anti aliasing on low like 2x. I play on a 27 inch 1080p monitor and it looks great like this.

well, you have to go back

FXAA is utter garbage
SMAA can be good with a temporal solution do it
TAA tends to be way too heavy on the blur cuz devs are retarded

Anti-what huh?

FXAA is fucking garbage. There's a reason it doesn't cost a single frame.

>unreal engine 4 game has great graphics
>only anti aliasing methods are fxaa/taa

I'm no even memeing, fpbp.

Attached: acceptable.jpg (710x888, 177K)

image-based AA is garbage that only underage use. my faith in humanity dwindles whenever someone unironically recommends buying an mcable.

i use it all the time. ive yet to find a game that it looks worse with it on.

fxaa looks nice
like motion blur without the motion part

>tfw trying to run vsync on a game that i cant hold 60 fps on

>new danganronpa V3
>anti-aliasing options
>off
>FXAA

I dislike it. Imagine reading a book and the typeface is pixelated and not beautiful by any means.Instead of making the typeface better and more readable they just blurred it instead. That's what AA is doing and it reeks of laziness instead of improving graphical technologies.

Better than nothing when you're a poorfag and your only option for PC gaming is a toaster laptop

I run everything at 8K so I don't need it.

Same, not worth the computing power when it's not even noticable in motion. I like playing games, not fapping to screencaps.

The best anti-aliasing is ironically none.
The increased performance masks aliasing by flickering faster than the human eye can detect.

>Dangit Ron Paul
It's a VN, why would you want to anti-alias a 2d picture?

based retard

a significant amount of the game is rendered in 3D. have you not played any of the games?

OoT wasn't that low rez. You're close, but the pixels are a bit much. Maybe 480p?

240p on N64 and 480p on Wii VC. Don't know about Wii U but probably the same.

WHy are you so retarted op? Why not just replay a macro so you have smooth motion while rotating the ingame camera. LOL

t. zoomer who thinks all AA is post processing
>I don't know why the fuck 8x MSAA gives Mankind Divided such a performance hit
jesus christ you are fucking retarded
based and redpilled

complete waste time

>t. zoomer
Not really, I just got used to it back when resolutions were so shit it would make your underage eyes bleed, child. Can't see the jaggies anymore unless I'm looking for them. AA is useless.

>Can't see the jaggies anymore unless I'm looking for them
that's not how it works you retarded faggot. As model and texture quality increases, so do jaggies at the same resolution. There's a reason why Morrowind is smooth as fuck at 1080p but The Witcher 3 is a jaggy awful fucking mess. AA is still necessary for all modern games even at 4k resolution to prevent LOD flickering at the least.

I don't really like Anti-Aliasing at higher resolutions, but when I'm using a smaller monitor, it's a must.

>worse performance AND make the screen look blurrier
What's the point

Here's your energy conservation, bro.

Attached: aa.png (626x199, 178K)

I'm not a zoomer faggot like you, child. You are a fucking mouthbreather if you believe AA is necessary. Play the fucking game instead of jerking off to screenshots.

you're a dumb faggot who is pretending to know what you're talking about. I'm done with you. You're pathetic.

It's aliasing, but the anti kind

You are unironically underage seeing as how games are unplayable to you without AA. Go be a fucking toddler over on reddit.

What's wrong with it? My games generally looks smoother with it max and I don't get that stuttering.

Aliasing is the last of Witcher 3's problems. How about running well on a mainstream GPU?

Game option menus really need to have a section describing what the fuck each AA option does and how it does it. I know a few of the big ones but it seems like every fucking game has new options I haven't seen before and I have to spend a half-hour researching it to figure out which type I want to use, only to do it all again when the next game has XYZAA instead of UVWAA.

kek thats a good catch

it makes games with lots of small things look worse, never thought about that

I'll turn almost everything down before anti aliasing, I cannot stand things buzzing around in my face being annoying.
Especially fences, fuck fences.

>No argument
