Recently got done playing one main line game of every single Pokemon Generation from 1 to 7. Favorite game was Pokemon Black 2 from the bunch. The callbacks to the previous game were great, the story was fantastic, you were seeing Gen 5 Pokemon for most of the game which is good, it's annoying to see too many Pokemon from outside the region. Pokemon World Tournament is a fantastic feature and I'm surprised it hasn't been seen in any games after B2W2. I don't have many gripes over the game, I do however, regret not being able to make use of the online features of B/W and B2W2. I'm sure I didn't miss much but I still kinda wish I could have experienced it.

Sword and Shield can have all the extra content in the world, but if it takes its story telling cues from gen 7 it won't be anywhere near the best. SM are the only games I haven't replayed and I also dropped USUM part way in. Not that these games ever really had great story or I'm even looking for one. Problem is gen 7 has exponentially more filler dialogue of absolutely no value that goes on for so long and slows progress at so many turns it gets to the point it's not fun to go through a second time.

If someone has really never played a Pokemon game before they should definitely begin with Black/White 2 as it's the single best experience Pokemon has to offer. Think of them as HGSS challenge editions, they're complete balance changes that alter the roster of every trainer's pokemon and wild pokemon so that the entire national pokedex is included, as well as improved level curve and all legendary pokemon being catchable. They also streamline all the bs evolution methods so you can get scizor and gengar in your rom, as well as buff all the underpowered mons by a 100 bst to make the more fun to use. Overall there the best versions of the game in my opinion, and there's one for Black2, Soulsilver, and Platinum.

They're romhacks of the games except all the battles are revamped, trainers have different pokemon, the pokemon are EV trained, they have lethal setups, gyms/rivals are actually hard.

The thing about Pokemon games is that they have the POTENTIAL to be in depth JRPGs. They're not but that's 100% GameFreak's fault. Partly because the balance is so irredeemably fucked that you have to make custom rules to keep 95% of the cast from being obliterated by the remaining 5%. And partly because GF actively refuses to use their own battle system.
But honestly Pokemon has a REALLY good set up for its battle system. 6 stats across 18 typings that have advantages and disadvantages with each other. But Pokemon can learn moves outside of their typing, circumventing the rock paper scissors mechanic. Status ailments that affect pokemon in various ways and some even benefiting from them. Abilities granting passive buffs. Items basically being equippable abilities. Entry hazards that can be set and removed. The ability to take advantage of terrain and weather. Like seriously Rain at first glance is meant for water types since they boost water moves. But Rain also blesses Steel, Bug, and Ice types by removing a weakness from them. It also blesses Electric and Flying types by making Thunder and Hurricane 100% accurate where otherwise they're only 70% accurate. And for that matter weaker moves tend to have bonuses attached to them like never missing and or boosting stats while stronger moves deal more damage while having some kind of negative effect like being less reliable or dropping stats.
Other JRPGs would give a back alley blowjob for all of this. But GF absolutely refuses to use any of it except for the endgame Battle Facility where the difficulty spike is so high you may as well throw out the team that got you there because of the shit EV IV system

It took like 3 gens, but Hail is playable now. I've been messing with it since gen 4.
In gen 4 spamming blizzard was just not good enough. In gen 5 it wasn't powerful enough to compete with Sun/Rain/Sand, mostly because it lacked a Chlorophyll/Swift Swim/Sand Rush variant and if you lost your weather starter first you were fucked. Abomasnow also doesn't really do anything compared to Hippowdon, Ninetales, Ttar and Poli. You could only really play it mixed with Wood Hammer and Blizzard, because it literally didn't do anything else.
Hail also suffered from having few things that actually used it, you had things with Blizzard and defensive Walrein and that's it. You also had to run something with Flash Fire to not have your Abomasnow die to literally anything.
Snow Cloak being banned also didn't help.
In gen 6 hail also didn't exist, due to weather nerfs
But now in gen 7 Aurora Veil is fucking stupid and you have a second weather starter, it is just barely enough to justify playing it.

Aurora Veil is good but that's one gimmick that hinges on one Pokemon doing its one thing before it gets taunted or gets murdered by the Steel types that are absolutely everywhere now because fuck Tapus. The problem with Ice type in general is that it has too many weaknesses and not enough strengths. Ice type is weak to Fire, Fighting, Rock, and Steel. 3 of those types are SUPER common offensive types with Steel becoming more popular by the day because fuck Tapus. Yes Fairy fucked Ice types right after they killed off all the Dragons. Not only because they made a previously defensive typing way more popular but also because they've completely usurped their role as the Dragon slayers of the game. Ice type MOVES are fantastic. Too bad Water types get access to almost all of them in addition to everything else. Why the fuck is the most effective way of burning a Water type move again?
Just being an Ice type instantly makes most pokemon worse. Because it opens the door to a ton of weaknesses that they just can't deal with. Only Weavile and kind of Mammoswine get to still be good and Power Creep has already started them down the path to irrelevance. Kyrum White and Black are next. And unlike Sun/ Rain/ Sand that benefits multiple types, Hail ONLY benefits Ice type and fucks everyone else. So no one will ever use it outside of one Pokemon's gimmick.

The core issue with ice is that it is a type where nearly all the Pokemon in it are designed to be defensive, but it has all of the common offensive types as a weakness. There is a handful of offensive ice types, but none of them are really good enough.
To fix Ice, I would propose to have hail give 50% flat too all defenses and make it do 1/8th, instead of the usual 1/16th.

That's basically what they were. They resisted all the common typings but were only effective against themselves. So they were just a shotgun typing that needed extra effort to deal with. And I know that one asshole is going to cite Garchomp and Salamence as the reason why Dragons needed a hard counter. Garchomp and Salamence were built to be absurd, it was their stats, movesets, and abilities that made them good. Anything would be good if you made them untouchable in sand and could one shot 2/3rds of the cast after a single swords dance. But Fairy exists now so all the Dragons are dead save like 2 and Ice isn't even a type anymore.

If you want to blame any typing as unbalanced, blame Fairy.
If you want to consider any typing as shitty, it would be Poison (they literally had to invent Fairy type so something can be double weak to poison, but then they went ahead creating Steel Fairies, nullifying _both_ Weaknesses the retarded fucks)
Usually the types balance out somehow, if you have many resistances, you get maybe 1-2 types weak to yours. With Steel, those were Ice and Rock, both countered by 3+ other types.
Fairy decimates Fighting and Dragon, both common Attacking Types. But its weak to the two most rarely used attacking types in the game, and _only_ to those, and that's bullshit. Could've been weak to Bug, those guys need a buff soon.

The power creep is also fucking obnoxious, and GF knows that. How they handle it is the problem, they just invent more powerful shit so uncommon pokemon who don't have a Mega get forever shafted into obscurity with ever lower tiers for them to compete.
This could all be fixed by establishing base stat tiers that actually make sense (something like 250, 400, 600 for normal evolution lines and 700 for legendaries), but fuck no.

Sapphire, mainly nostalgia but I loved playing through that game as a kid. I had played Red and Gold beforehand, but Sapphire was the first game to really wow me with it's world. I always felt that Red/Gold was somewhat scary and off putting with the graphics it had when I was a kid and places like Lavender town were awful for me, and I hated playing at night in Gold and the music was always off putting in places like caves.
Sapphire on the other hand was always bright and colourful for me, the game really felt like an adventure as well which I loved. You could go to tropical forest towns, dive underwater to find hidden cities, explore deserts, volcanoes and such. Really gave off a feeling of going places and it changing constantly. I also liked how it was always sunny and there was no day/night cycle since I really liked playing in the day.
I think I put around 200 hours into it when I was a kid, plus all the time I spent just restarting the game and playing it from the beginning until my batteries ran out (since I didn't save). Got my Swampert up to Level 100 as well. Wish I still had my cart.
Nostalgia aside, I had a lot of fun playing through HG/SS and BW2. I feel those are the real best games of the series. HGSS adds so fucking much to G/S that it's the perfect example of what a remake should be and I wish ORAS got the same treatment but of course Game Freak didn't give a shit about that. BW2 solved ALL the problems BW had and improved upon it tenfold. I didn't even finish the game in English and I loved it. The original BW is my least favourite Pokemon game, I did not enjoy playing it, but playing through BW2 was just a treat. I loved the music, environments, wider variety of Pokémon. Music especially, Unique gym music is fucking cool and I loved how they all were unique, like Elesa's and Roxie.
