Allow me to make things EVEN MORE confusing. Let's use Jimmy Neutron as a metaphor for what very well can be done using KH3 Keyblade Master Mechanics.

So, since we KNOW Keyblade Masters can possess people(Xehanort does it, Luxu has made a lifestyle of it), and since we KNOW Sora and Kairi produce a witch who can fuck with people's memories, not only could Kairi and Sora swap bodies, but Kairi could overwrite both her own memories and Sora's memories to make Kairi in Sora's body think she's Sora, and Sora in Kairi's body think he's Kairi.

As to WHY they'd do this, well, Ava is both a Foreteller, someone who knows the future, and a traitor, someone who probably wants to change the future. She's associated with Kitsunes who are known to pull this shapeshifting bullshit trickery all the time.

I think it was the ultimania that confirmed it, but Eraqus is said to be a bloodline descendant of the foretellers and people would think it would be from Ava.

I can even give you a motive for this. Well, all Foretellers have the Luxu motive of "they gotta survive to a certain point so they'll hijack a body or something", but since the Foretellers see the future and know that the future is set in stone, they "cheat", a little.

In other words, say the future says "The Spikey Haired Boy shall sacrifice himself for the good of all"

You can't change that, but since you're a Keyblade Master with bodyswapping powers, what you can do is swap your heart with his, literally fucking become him, and fulfill the prophecy while saving the spikey haired boy's essence.

Of course, as KH itself point out, what a person's essence is, is tricky. Xemnas gives a whole speak warning Sora to make sure that his box's content matches the label on the outside. Now Xemnas could just be a dick, but of course he illustrates an actual problem.

If Sora loses his memories, is he Sora? If he gets a different body, is he Sora? Different heart? Different soul? Will?

Memories, Heart, Souls, Will, all these things are separate components in KH. The characters in KH can sense people's hearts, but we really can only see their bodies and make guesses. Like, we know Kairi's heart entered Sora in KH1, and we know that when Kairi was struck down by Xehanort in KH3 her heart didn't pop out.

My opinion is that past a certain point of fuckery a character is their own self.
