A big problem rimworld has is how a lot of its mechanics are triggered. It is almost always better to turn down a colonist than to deal with a troublesome colonist due to raids scaling based on player population.

Anyway, for your particular question. Pyros are 90% no, 10% maybe. Pyromanics are relatively low damage if you manage them well, BUT they can also go off at any random time. So, you might have two people missing from your battle line because one of them is starting fires, and the other one is baby sitting or arresting him. Lucifierium addicts? Yes, if you can afford them. It's expensive to maintain, and you might as well just put them in cryptosleep if you can't afford it. I recommend just not accepting any addicts.

Having your colonists unable to hit a guy who is standing in the middle of nowhere while he potshots your colonists that are behind cover? Happens a lot simply because the vanilla combat is heavily reliant on RNG, doesn't mean the death of your colony but you can end up with 4-5 people unable to fight.
Hell, my worse case was a fat old naked raider with cataract that was apparently revolver ocelot as he crippled all 6 people in my colony.

Raids scale with wealth. Not population. Colonists contribute to wealth if they have great stats and skills but you can still get massive raids even if you only have one or two people if they're skilled and powerful enough.

Having a luciferium power armored warrior that you keep in a freezer until needed, Doomguy style, is pretty good, of course you need to sustain their addiction when you need them unless you want Doomguy to rip your colony a new asshole before dying.

No. Raids scale with net worth, colonists have worth and thus influence raid size. But this is semantics.

Point is, having additional colonists that aren't particularly useful unnecessarily increases difficulty of raids. If you want to game this system a bit, losing colonists decreases raid size for a period of time.

The random event system is really poorly balanced, early on the game will throw everything at you, for instance you almost always get hit by Heat Wave during summer and Cold Snap during winter, then eventually it all slow down to a crawl.

Raids are determined partially based on Colony Value. If you hoard a lot of shit and you make expensive statues, you end up facing harder and harder enemies even though you aren't really advancing technologically. This mod makes it more of an over time value.

Most of the events I dealt with early on were dealing with the occasional thug or two, usually armed with clubs, which were pretty much a joke and would usually end with them getting mortally wounded from gunfire and then stabbed to death while they were down and dying
