Compare modern Square Enix to late 90's Square. They used to pump out several cult classics every year. Heck, we got FF 7, 8 and 9 all in less than a 4 year time span along with all of the other great games they used to make.
Now they make huge, big budget games that take 5+ years each and are largely straight up worse

Whenever a company sells well and makes alot of money, their quality dives in proportion. Has anyone ever noticed that? Look at Nintendo for instance, I can't name a single game on their systems above a 5/10, except for maybe a 3Ds game from a few years ago. Yet they're selling like hotcakes.
The Ps4 is even worse about this. It's almost 100 million in terms of sales, but bloodborne remains the only thing that isn't a bloated western movie, and even that runs at a cinematic 20 FPS.

Nintendo had a massive dip in quality during the wildly successful Wii era. Mario Galaxy 1+2 were pretty good, but other than that we got a bunch of duds or direction changes that nobody asked for out of their more notable franchises. Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Skyward Sword? Mediocre at best.
The Ps4's "good library" was also accentuated by billions of shovelware titles, the same fate of the wii.
They will play safe, as they have with every console of theirs. They big gamble is PSVR and it's well underway already.

Nintendo's better games were made when they were only mildly successful, like the N64 and gamecube. They had the occasional good game otherwise, but when they hit solid gold, their game quality went down the tubes. Pokemon is a perfect example, with the declining quality inversely related to it being the biggest IP in existence.
That's not the same, those games you mentioned were weak entries in their respective series, a dip in quality. Many of them finally received a return to form on the Switch.

The gamecube trounced the PS2 in many, many ways, such as actually having texture compression, pseudo shaders and actually running the graphics at 640x480 instead of retarded 512x448/320x448.
What limited the cube horribly was the tiny memory nintendo give it, only 24MB of actually useful memory.
And the Wii was an unleashed gamecube, that showed its full power with super mario galaxy, and nothing else because it was flooded with low quality shovelware.
