Before 2018 E3, there was a popular imgur leak that hinted at characters such as Sora and Geno being in Smash. Masked Man was a Square Enix translator who stupidly called it out on being fake because, in his words.

Basically, he was straight up saying that SE is being involved in Smash Ultimate, breaking his NDA.
He realized that he made a mistake and promptly deleted all of his posts AND his connected accounts. After that, we don't know what happened to him. He probably lost his job.

on several sites, people were talking about that old ass Imgur Riddle that was rumoring a fuckton of characters like whatever that was rumored already plus Medusa, Porky, Goroh, Takamaru, Sora, Mimikyu, Sora, Elma, and Geno+Mallow as a team up.
it got deleted on reddit since it was a fake leak but some people didn't want to let go of it.
that fake leak gotten popular because people thought it was matching up to Vergeben leaks, Emily Roger shit, the Disney VP saying Sora is good for Smash, and RelaxAlax? baiting leakfags. it later got a shitty 5ch variant to back it up but it was debunked as soon it talked about Elma's echo voice shit.
Vergeben later stated he went from opposing it to a neutral stance on the rumor because he hear Snake was coming back (this is where the Minecraft rumor even happened too), he still told everyone not to jump in on this since nothing else has been confirmed.
the fake leak was also responsible for the whole "Heroes vs Villains" speculation shit people thought it was real because another fake leaker (loz18) speculated it could be happening.
afterwards, Masked Man came out saying the leak was fake and it had characters only he'd knows that weren't getting into Smash at all.
Smashchu, the idiot behind "photoshop little mac" meme, later came out saying he isn't bullshitting and of course, he's part of the same circle Masked Man was in at the time too.
