Post good sprites.
Post good sprites
the entirety of breath of fire 4
Haha, what a unique joke.
I can't think of a better looking isometric game than bof4
THE SOUL... IT'S TOO MUCH SOUL
probably the most perfect example to cite when talking about pixel art, godlike animation as well. I used to think this game was nice looking at the time but didn't come to truly appreciate it til years after I played it. It's probably the epitome of sprite work
It always amazed me how so few pixels could adequately portray a skeleton
Best girl.
That's clearly an evil sprite.
One of the most beautiful games of all time.
On another note, gotta give a shout out to Comix Zone, one of the most stylish games of 16-bit era.
I know it was made many years later and can't really be compared, but hear me out: Brigador (in motion, not in screenshots, go pirate it and check)
ok you win this round
underrated desu
the animations in comix zone are top notch, especially when going from panel to panel
Reee why does soda have to be bad for you. I just wanted to drink carbonated sugar liquid every now and then instead of just water, tea with no sugar and no creamer, and black coffee.
metal slug would like to have a word with you
its certainly up there, especially the lewd moments
Smalltime
Yurocucks and amerimutts will never get the cucumber flavor sprite
This sprite looks so much more detailed in the game, maybe because you're not supposed to see it up close like this.
Ahh, a patrician.
Why isn't there an autistic collection of these somewhere
There’s a few twitters that tweet out pixel gifs every so often
squawk
What other breath of fire games are worth playing before 4?
just 3 really. Some will say 2, but 2 has some really fucking trash moments and is largely overrated imo. 1 is just outdated, best way to describe it is to call it a NES rpg that just happens to be on the SNES.
3 and 4 are absolute top tier games though.
Alright, thanks user
SHOOOBUDAAA
Spritelet here, can anybody loosely describe to me the process behind making such good sprite work? Do the artists really go pixel by pixel or do they make the drawings then pixelate them with a special program?
Oh, and is there any way to play 4 without the censorship?
Ragnarok really was a fluke. Look at how much detail everything had.
Sprites had unique deaths, attacks and getting hit animations. Every other Gravity game has no where near the heart or effort they put in for RO.
as pixels from scratch, or digitizing and then refining per pixel. there is no "magic program"
Dont know about everybody else but first i animate the character then redraw the animation with the binary pen tool.
Suikoden 2 might just rival it, in terms of the work put in to make unique sprite animations.
I'd guess if you emulated the japanese version, though the censorship is not too egregious, its like 1 or 2 scenes that you can just look up on youtube. Though it is strange considering they didn't bother censoring deis being naked in BoF3 lol.
not really lol
good god I love the sprite work and animation in metalslug
2 and 1 are both better than 3.
BoF three improved on so much, but sucked so hard with it's characters in the beginning that I couldn't keep playing and had to jump to 4, which had all the good design choices of 3, but in a much more interesting game.
only marginally better than chrono trigger
anything out of Octopath
Best out of the blue purchase I ever made
1 maybe but not 2. calling 2 better than 3 is retarded honestly, 2 has so many problems (dragon forms are summons), and the game is so poorly paced with how the entire game is basically just one big side quest until the final dungeon, and the final dungeon is absolute fucking dog shit, like one of the worst dungeons I've ever had the displeasure of playing through in a game, and it never fucking ends, so calling it infinity is fitting. Also ryu's sister taking up half the plot of the game and then having 0 relevance afterwards.
I could keep going but you get my point.
nice shitty emu filter
Chrono Trigger has far fewer, more oftenly reused, animations.
I don't know, when I replayed it up to the return to the main character's home, and he gets knocked into a pole, I found myself really wondering how many other games would bother making a unique sprite animations for him and the girl he is with for just that one scene, instead of just reusing the standard sprite animation for getting hit and falling in battle.
this run cycle still mesmerizes me
As an artlet how do i into sprite art? I can make aome mediocrw doodles in Aseprite but should I have a basis in actual art first and read some books about loomis art theory or something?
What a cute girl, what's her game?
People seem to remember BoF2 quite fondly but it doesn't hold up so well on replays and further examination. It has a lot of really poor decisions, the most meme worthy translation in history, it seems like nothing that happens in the game matters to the overarching story until you get to the penultimate dungeon, and it forces you to use sten for long periods of time when he is a terrible character. Fusing is also a cool idea if not for the fact that half the cast of the game is terrible without them and you get forced out of them far too easily, not to mention the final dungeon forcing your characters to diffuse for a cutscene halfway through that shit.
But it has Katt so its the best game in the franchise I guess?
It also introduced a somewhat ambitious city building mechanic.
What a cute boy, what's his game?
SNK were the kings of combining spritework and atmosphere
Pretty sure character is a dude I think
that's breath of fire if i ever saw it
true, one of the few interesting aspects of the game, shame that you can irrevocably fuck yourself over if you don't know exactly who to recruit since there is basically a "best" tenant for every building in it and choosing wrong locks you out of stat increasing items and really good shit otherwise.
BoF3 and 4 also had it with the fairy village though and its much better in those games.
why did you filter it
This sort of thing is created out of passion rather than churned out by a corporate game studio looking to minimize costs in any way. Your only hope for real art going forward are indies and the small number of proper art houses that have held out like Fromsoft.
Dude... 3 was always objectivly better than 4
As much as I love 2, all of those points are fair. The translation is rather spotty, too.
>and its much better in those games
I don't know as much about 3's fairy village (I've read about it, but the game sucked too much for me to make it that far myself), but in 4 at least I didn't think the fairy village was all that great. Aside from one or two things, it was barely worth bothering with, the fairies were kind of annoying, and it had little plot relevance on the rest of the game.
Still better than Bravely Default's much less than half-assed attempt at building a town.
The problem with indies is often going to far the other way, and having people with passion, but no resources to get really professional work.
It's only relatively recently that we seem to be getting indies that hit the right balance of having enough of a team and a budget, while still being independent. Like Hollow or Shovel Knight.
you don't have to tell me twice. There's something about games with HUGE design teams that just kills the soul of most big budget games. Too many cooks spoil the broth and all that.
>expecting me to care about the adventure of a literal newborn baby as he wanders his way from town to town meeting people who expect this baby to help them solve their problems
hollow knight has an incredibly small team, the talent and hard work to make games that good is just very rare. Always has been.
I believe when it was first advertised it stated that the party members had around 4,000 frames of animation.
AoCF had some great spritework
Daily reminder that if you play on an emulator, scanlines are the only correct choice. Don't kill the soul with those filthy "hd" filters.
Where did all the love go? I miss little details like this.
That's my wife (male) from Guilty Gear.
When all the big one crash and burn and the customer stop being a 3d graphics whore.
man I should pick this game up again
It's too soulfull! I need to play it again!
