For instance, the choices you make have an impact on the story. It's the small choices that have the biggest impact however. I feel that the Arisen's Beloved is one such choice you make for the game. When you fight the dragon, if you kill her then you get a special ending. You could also choose to remain a bachelor if you so desire to. There is also the matter of helping Aelinore when being strangled. You could have chosen not to help her you know. I also really enjoyed the subtlety of the dragon not causing ANY harm. Because you dared defy the dragon in Cassardis you become the Arisen.
Then there is also the instance of the dragon's dogma itself. None of what you do in the game matters. Grigoria frequently contrasts between destiny and free will.

There aren't any sidequests from people in distress, or romance, or heroes or villans in Dark Souls. There are covenants, like Chosen Undead and Solaire. I understand that some people prefer it that way. But in my opinion, the things that make us human are the emotions that compel us to make choices in the first place. Dragon's Dogma is an entirely more satisfying game in that you, the player must make these difficult choices that aren't as obvious.

This is comparing Dragon's Dogma to dark souls. I thought it would be fine to list Miyazaki versus Itsuno for their works.
Also not liking DMC3 is up to subjective taste, but it is one of the greatest videogames of all time and additionally one of the few to execute an entertaining story flawlessly (except in special edition's inclusion of Jester fights). Albeit traditional and not using anything unique to the videogame/gaming mediums (e.g. Spector, Kojima, Taro). Though, I would argue DMC3's intro is perfect in showing the player how they should be playing the game.
The game did have its lows such as some enemy types and Arkham boss fight. This is why DMC5 not having any low point and better gameplay shines above it, despite the weaker story.

Best part about Dragon's Dogma is when it tries to stop ripping off Berserk more than Dark Souls does and does a huge homage to biblical stories e.g. the dragons acting as both temptating devils and pacifying angels. The incomplete Dark Arisen in some weird form between human and dragon and looks exactly like some depiction of satan is really great.
I personally feel no emotional connection to any character in Dragon's Dogma though. Except maybe meta wise if I made a pawn that wasnt a caricature of an online acquaintance.

The whole story is about battling with God and fate. That's why when you kill the dragon and a pit appears you are descending into what appears to be purgatory. In all honesty I can't comment that much on Dark Souls beyond the first one and could care less for the lore. I probably missed half if not all of those people that needed help as Chosen Undead. >I personally feel no emotional connection to any character in Dragon's Dogma though. Yeah it's the generic quests. I wish the nameless NPCs weren't all filler dialogue and you could actually encounter in the overworld like in the mining town or being hunted by bandits. Some of the main characters, like Julien and Mercedes are really interesting.
