It did for about a year. TERA to this day had the highest skill ceiling PvP and PvE in any MMORPG, but gamers don't want that. Money talks, ESPECIALLY for Asian companies who literally don't give a fuck about making their players spend $100 to unlock a hat. TERA got casualized for being too hard pretty early on, then it added a bunch of new classes, each one having less than half the number of skills as any of the original classes to cater to casuals and normalfags that don't want a challenge or anything complicated. It just kept going downhill like that until it turned into whatever the fuck it is right now. I hope they at least salvage elins and make a TERA 2.

i'd love to see Black Desert actually do something with its combat system, the invididual actions themselves weave together fluidly and it feels real good to play when you're adequately geared and have great ping. That said, the obvious lack of any kind of interesting combat encounters is a huge detriment toward my enjoyment of the game.
If they just made some instanced boss fight arenas with tight mechanics and great hitboxes, Black Desert has the potential to be Vindictus 2.0 in that regard, and that would be incredible.
I haven't had as much fun in an multiplayer action game as I did in the heydays of Vindictus around the time season 1 came close to completion and the big guy with the pillars came out. Fighting stuff like Irukul, where a couple players used their chains to hold the thing in place while the others slashed it or ingkells who required precise dodge timings and punished you for messing up
For anyone interested in Vindictus I heartly recommed checking it out preferrably with someone else to play but solo is fine too.
They streamlined season 1 incredibly so it's maybe a great 15-20 hours of fun, quest dialogue is also partly skippable now, since that was always a huge complaint for people leveling twinks

As I said in my previous comment it's now incredibly streamlined and you just breeze through the season 1 content at a nervewracking rate, where it used to be easily 60-70 hours of play now it's maybe 10-20, which isn't terrible I suppose, seeing as the player numbers are ever dwindling and it's hard to find people for raid bosses you inevitably have to solo them (which is quite possible, mind you)

God man, Tera was some of the most fun I've had in an MMO in a long while. Picked it up with a friend in late 2013 I think and played for a good solid two years. Combat was great and the world was so fun to explore. It was one of those few times where it installed that sense of wonder in you I guess. Dropping into the Island of Dawn for the first time, seeing some of the unused space there and wondering if anything had ever been there before, which was a total possibility considering it ended up just getting removed anyway. Did any of you ever explore some of the unused zones? There were a few areas where you could get out of bounds and just run wild.

I lost interest in PvP when reaper came out. Made one out of curiosity and then went to Corsair. I had around 30 kills and 40 assists in a match without even trying, when the older classes had around 5 kills or so each. It was ridiculous.

Rather than actually talk to their community, Enmasse Entertainment has pushed the job of communication onto unpaid volunteers. Their 'community manager' hasn't said a word to the community in ages.

Back in the day, I joined a party of three others to take down those fangspawns in Pora Elinu. We wiped about 6 times when the tank kept missing the timing for the bleed attack. There were no flashy circles to show the timing or range. We spent hours sitting there, discussing strategy around a campfire, gathering our savings to buy charms, and it was fucking fun. We finally got all the BAMs when a healer joined up, and it really felt like an achievement.

For me it was the Visionmaker grind. The game operates in cycles where one year, the best gear is obtained through the latest dungeon. This gear set has the best stats and offers a great set effect, and the only requirement to get the set is the clear the dungeon and roll on the equipment.
The next year, they introduce the next tier of Visionmaker and then it all goes downhill. Visionmaker is an armor set that is a direct upgrade from the best dungeon equipment. But to get it, you must first craft the first tier of VM and then upgrade it progressively from each tier, with every step requiring its own laundry list of materials. These materials are arduous to farm and are often time-gated, for example a piece of VM armor might need 200 feathers/scales, and the dungeons that have a chance to drop them are limited to 4 instances per character a day. Visionmaker is designed to keep people from quitting after new dungeon releases, by introducing an autistic fucking grind with the reward being powercreeped gear. What's worse is there are two types of VM gear, PVE and PVP. Many players have both sets. During the VM year, people who aren't willing to make that autistic grind for VM gear will get their shit pushed in in both PVP and PVE by autists who've grinded VM since its conception and kept up the grind until current day. Because there is literally no alternative BiS besides VM.
And so the cycle continues. New content. Hype. New Visionmaker. Quit.

During that time, it felt amazing to play with friends and old guildmates that came back just to check out the patch, dungeon erryday and gear back up. They added way too much unnecessary bullshit to just get to the next dungeon (in terms of having appropriate ilvl and whatnot) and everyone in my guild quit. That's not true at all. Nexon still makes (usually pretty solid) MMOs. They just either never make it out of korea because mmos aren't profitable anywhere else, or they die because they were a shit idea. See: Ascendant one. MOBA based on greek gods turned into koreaboo anime waifus and chad thundercocks. Really fun game, but it has no place existing. in the AoS category they publish dota 2 in korea, they publish battlerite in korea, they own cyphers and it's up there for popularity, well beating smite in the 3rd person category.
Chinese MMOs are a misnomer, they didn't exist until a few years ago unless you count asset stop 'n' swops are mmos I guess. Moonlight blade is a very VERY popular action based game that's due for a western release for some god-forsaken reason this year. Chinese devs are working side by side with nexon and tencent to work on a slew of new games, at least 10 slated for release in chinese territories and taiwan if they do well.
Phone games are starting to show signs of falloff and companies are realizing it. Netmarble has been in talks of purchasing majority Nexon shares from the CEO to re-establish their PC market since they closed up shop for some reason to chase after mobile, only to have EVERY SINGLE ONE of their games besides future fight fail miserably after it's opening 2 months. If you want a laugh, look at their investor reports sometimes. tens of millions of dollars thrown in the garbage to develop some stupid piece of shit irrelephant FPS for mobile, but future fight saved their asses from being in the red so everyone ignores it.

They spent most of the 2010s shitting out dozens of games a year, bad idea, almost none stuck, and if I asked you, you'd probably have a hard time thinking of a single one (besides maybe maplestory 2 I guess), but as of 2018 they've had a massive turnaround on their "forever franchises" since DFO finally beat star wars gross box office totals in profit. Yeah yeah toys are the main selling point but investors don't care, they tune out everything but "OUR GAME IS BIGGER THAN STAR WARS". And it's not entirely false, DFO in china is the #1 mmo, it beat out wow as of 2017. There were more people at an irl event for it than there were at the fucking avengers infinity war premiere. That's some shit.
Anyway, stuff like DFO, maplestory, kart rider, mabinogi to a lesser extent, and their older franchises most people have never heard of, baram, talesweaver, LoD. They're working on redoubling efforts on those games, and infusing new blood into the workforce for them to create new content, as opposed to letting them stagnate with skeleton crew support. In return, we saw maplestory and DFO post record profits for them last year. 50%~ YoY for both, DFO was like fucking 120% or something ridiculous, maplestory was 60-some. Both of them are 15+ year old games, and represent, just those two, over 70% of all of nexon's profits worldwide. Just china and korea.
