Funny, it was my first FF game that I played when I was 17. I could not believe this series had a following so large and dedicated. I've since identified it as "Square Enix Syndrome," it is a condition that, regardless of how bad SE fucks up a franchise or a game, fans are still willing to forgive the franchise and throw money at all their dumb concerts and figures and shit. I surmise nostalgia is the main reason the condition exists.
I have since played VII, VI, IX, IV, and XV, and XIII and XV are irredeemable shit.

It's Motomu Toriyama that loved Lightning. Like legitimate waifufag love. He was FF13's director and heavily pushed for sequels to the game within Square Enix. Between the release of FF13 and FF13-2 he was involved in dissidia 012, front mission evolved and 3rd birthday (that shit parasite eve sequel) all of which have references to Lightning in them.
After that he directed and oversaw the script for FF13-2, then immediately pushed for a Lightning based event for the FF14 mmo.
The guy is essentially the biggest Lightning fanboy and also happens to be the guy who helped create her.

XIII being fucking poison is a big part of it, too, user. They didn't rename Agito XIII for no reason.
They shat out XIII sequels that no one actually asked for while they fixed XIV. XV didn't see any serious development until ARR launched and ARR was actually successful.
All work on Agito was not stopped, Type-0 released in 2011, two years before ARR launched. The FNC games were always meant to be drastically different from each other, they were always going to be different interpretations of the base lore around FFXIII. Toriyama shitting out sequels had no affect on that.
Versus wasn't even retitled until after ARR launched, either. They chose to salvage a product that had been in development hell and turn it into the next flagship title, because they knew people weren't going to buy another goddamn game with XIII on the label, the sales dwindling sales with each title openly connected to it were proof of that.
It's a convoluted mess when the idea of crystals were never supposed to be complicated to begin with. They're just supposed to be giant magic stones that are connected to the classical elements. Someone at SE assumed the wrong shit when people said they wanted crystal focused plots like the old days.

They act differently in the games and there are actually some nice NPC characters (although they matter ever so little to the waifu ranking, that is based mostly on the main characters. For the characters they matter more.). Mostly for waifus it's that LRXIII has Lumina and it didn't ruin XIII-2 Serah, because she barely appeared. Lightning was also her only tolerable incarnation in games.

Yes. (Gameplay, customization and characters in that order are my top interests.) Just Guard plus Just Attack is a cheat code to my heart. You feel like a force of nature in LRXIII. Both in combat and that your arrival is the most important event to any character you come across. I've never gotten this feeling since Planescape: Torment, except in strictly combat terms.
But I have to say it was fairly entertaining after a while watching Toriyama fall all over himself to praise and prop up Lightning at any chance he got.
LRXIII is quite non-serious as well, so it's easier to swallow the more faulty parts and just laugh about them. And it's not like there weren't other successful things about such as atmosphere and little shoutouts to previous things like Terra.

ff13 just has you autobattle to pick a a word from a menu to cue it up and watch a cutscene and since there is only 3 members in battle at once thate only 3 weapon types at once 2 of which are fully ai autobattle at all times in battle in 13, meanwhile noctis alone has 4 unique weapon types all with their own combos and attacks and with enenies having their break % which is far more essential to exploit to defeat enemies quicker by targetting weak points to break them which earns both rare drops and vulnerable states enemies which fucks them over quick, far more effective than the retarded stagger in 13 which its only "strategy" is literally just spam rav then when full use com to prolong the stagger, no thought required, that fucking takes less input than using a tech command in XV to get prompto to half enemies defence with piercer or ignis to heal party and reposition them with regroup, etc.
ff13 literally has less strategy required than anything in XV and it has objectively less combat variety, mechanics, things you can actual do, things enemies do, things the whole party can do etc than XV ever had since launch. Get fucked you dumb 13fag

the autobattle often chains phys/mag attacks together in the ravager role because "on paper" it builds more chain % per hit. In reality however, chaining phy/mag is slow as fuck and completely inefficient. The only way you can somewhat avoid this is by maxing a character's mage stat so the AB will prefer non-phys attacks. The breakage system is a neutered version of Stagger, if we are to be truly honest. The difference is that instead of rewarding the exploitation of an enemies weakness with a long period in which they become vulnerable, XV opts to drop you catalysts for "spells". The largest of enemies becomes invalid for a grand total of 15 or so seconds after targeting its weak spot. I'm sure you believe that's a wonderful mechanic, but I, for one, have no interested in the glorified magic bombs in this game, so Breakage falls apart almost immediately.
