Short swords were sidearms and are definitely over represented, Great swords were used frequently in combat. The lack of pole arms in video games is more noticeable, because their presence would notably make short swords obsolete

Not sure if you’re joking or being serious, but not fighting when attacked is the correct option 90% of the time for the simple fact that the only reason you’re being attacked in the first place is that the attacker sized you up and concluded there’s little to no chance of you being able to fight him successfully, whereas the victim is given no such choice.

There's probably not a single game out there that can simulate real weapon effectiveness through physics and such so we just make hitboxes and shit. The arc of the swing and how it damages cleanly as long as you land the hit just makes for fun and easy to pick up games.
