The human mind is divided into 3 parts, the mask, the conscience, and the shadow. A persona is like a mask you wear and is essentially a tamed shadow. When Aigis received a plume of dusk inside her, she was given a very basic form of a human personality that evolved over time. Plumes of dusk allow evokers, Mitsuru's motorcycle, and Aigis to operate during the Dark Hour. This is why she's still functional during that period of time despite being made of machinery.

The characters in P3 immediately overcome their shadows by participating in or simulating a life or death situation. However they have issues summoning it normally so they need to repeatedly use the evokers.
P4 characters are almost overcome by their shadows because they've been bottling up that side of their personality for so long it's reached critical mass.
P5 characters are being tormented by similar things to the P4 crew but instead of conquering their shadows it's almost like they embrace it, which would explain the costumes, since they merge with their shadow's uniqueness.

I never understood why Aigis is in section 3. Why is she in the same section as Roll? Aigis has very visible robotic joints and lacks proper human feet. Roll barely looks any different than a normal human in the setting in most of the games she's in, aside from Battle Network in which she's not even a robot at all.
