Did you ever experience grass wear or was it just something you were constantly afraid of? I'm pretty sure it will always keep a certain percentage of grass alive in your town no matter what, so all it really does is make natural looking paths along the routes you mostly take, and even then it's only if you're running around all the time.

Grass wear was an issue in NL for anyone who played a lot or invited people to their towns. It had the side benefit of those patterns you could make neat paths out of to hide it and direct visitors around your town, but you'd have wonky paths underneath unless you were really good at walking between the lines. So you never wanted to pull those patterns up.

It's a cool idea that just doesn't translate into the game well. Especially when there are perma-dead areas so you can't even ensure where you don't walk stays green unless you incorporate those parts into your paths. Which you'll never follow without a tile set covering it. The cycle is vicious.

I never said that wanting optional things is bad, and I never said that I wanted a new leaf port. There are ways to make the game better without adding all the normie bullshit. For example:
Better dialog, more dynamic weather, more interesting town layouts, more interesting town events/festivals, comfy scenes like pic related, better music, maybe a different POV than PG and NL, ability to have closer bonds with villagers. Idk why normies think that having a job in animal crossing would be a good thing lmao they truly are irl npcs.

The dance club was revolutionary. Nothing else in AC history compares.

Probably so shoes and pants would be easier to see, since being able to change those was one of the few notable new features in New Leaf.

KK being turned into a sellout DJ is one of the worst things to happen in AC history.

Also true, but being able to buy his music instead of being reduced to his free bootlegs was a nice change. Even though he's still anti-corporate every Saturday. The complete loss of character goes past KK into nearly everyone in the game, so I don't focus too much on that sellout aspect.

No new villagers. Instead rework villager interactions as hard as possible. Go back to Gamecube-era writing as a starting point and build up from there. Villagers now have set likes/dislikes-- You can't fuck up their house by giving them whatever random garbage you have any more because they'll only take furniture they like. If a villager dislikes bugs, they're not going to let you replace all their shit with bugs. Additionally, villagers can now wear different kinds of clothing. However, certain animals can't wear certain things and might get a little upset if you try to give them one. (i.e.: A bird villager can't wear a mask because they have a beak, a frog villager can't wear a hat because of the higher eyes, most villagers probably won't wear shoes because of paws or whatever else, etc) Cranky villager types will actively act like assholes to you and everyone else until you can get them to like you. Same goes for snooty, obviously.
Isabelle is no longer the mascot. As others ITT have suggested, she's now Tortimer's assistant. Functionally, she does the exact same shit, only now it's through "suggestions" instead of a direct channel. Villagers also now actually donate decent amounts to PWPs so you're not paying the whole fucking thing by yourself unless you want it immediately.
Remove Grass Wear.
Bring back Resetti.
Allow the player to go to the City again for various things, though keep it mostly as a destination for more expensive shops and some fancy online shit.
Give furniture more functions. Allow messaging/furniture ordering/WarioWare DIY-style forum browsing through laptops, allow villagers to be invited over through phones, let food be a thing that has literally no effect whatsoever aside from maybe small speed boosts.
Weather now has more of an effect to compensate for no Grass Wear. If you go outside in the snow without warm clothes, you can get a cold, which does what a cold usually does in AC.
