piracy of games that are no longer being sold should be legal and emulation should be legal
there should be a distinction between piracy and preservation

It's not piracy if it was already paid for by a generous benefactor.

It is indeed. I'm still going to do it, because I can.

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean it's not legal

Just because it's illegal doesn't mean you can't do it

There's this line between downloading a copy for personal use which harms absolutely nobody and most, if not all ISPs won't give a shit about it, and downloading to sell copies for personal gain. Obviously the latter is an actual crime but people just love shoving everyone in the same boat.

Nope. Epic exclusives are perfectly fine to pirate and you know it.

Publishers often refer to copying they don't approve of as “piracy.” In this way, they imply that it is ethically equivalent to attacking ships on the high seas, kidnapping and murdering the people on them. Based on such propaganda, they have procured laws in most of the world to forbid copying in most (or sometimes all) circumstances. (They are still pressuring to make these prohibitions more complete.)

If you don't believe that copying not approved by the publisher is just like kidnapping and murder, you might prefer not to use the word “piracy” to describe it. Neutral terms such as “unauthorized copying” (or “prohibited copying” for the situation where it is illegal) are available for use instead. Some of us might even prefer to use a positive term such as “sharing information with your neighbor.”

A US judge, presiding over a trial for copyright infringement, recognized that “piracy” and “theft” are smear words:

I have zero simpathy for game companies. They started this trend of making videogames a multimillionaire industry when simpler cheaper games can be just as fun. If they want to appeal to retards that only play games with realistic graphics then that's their problem. I'm not giving them my hard earned money.

I still buy CDs

Small filesize and pretty much no quality is lost when copying, to the day people still use youtubemp3downloader anyway. Distributors are greedy fucks who demonize being able to sell single songs for very cheap online and instead rely on services like Spotify which are a nightmare to find music on unless it's popular enough.

Also major game companies don't give a flying shit about morals so I don't see why I should either.

This too. An eye for an eye.

Remember when companies tried to demonize selling used games by calling it a crime similar to piracy? Remember how Microsoft tried to kill the used games market by only allowing the game being playable in the console where the key was used for the first time?

There's a good reason piracy is a necessary evil, to stop these kind of retarded policies to take effect, but companies will never admit that piracy rarely, if ever, affects actual sales and would rather keep injecting every single game with Denuvo bloatware that only makes the game require more resources to play and more space in the HDD.

Same here but I stopped paying for Netflix once they disabled the ability to log in into different regions via proxy server.

Pretty sure you cant own sound either yet here everybody are listening to whatever they want for free anytime and anywhere.

Not trying to defend spotify, but you can find some relatively obscure music and stuff like that, specially if the band is willing to sign in to the service, they might get pennies for the streamings, but most of the small bands think the investment is good enough because of the exposure, after all, small acts make money out of merch and concert tickets, not albums.

Good, fuck the State and its bullshit monopoly on violence. Fuck the capitalists for creating an unjust hierarchy and enlisting police to protect that hierarchy from the working underclass. And fuck you bootlickers who defend that system.

I still remember the whole legal drama with megaupload because, as far as I remember, they wanted to provide musicians a platform to sell their music and have all profit go to themselves. It sounded like a really nice idea, but granted, I'm not really much into the music industry so I'm not sure if there has been a similar platform recently.

NordVPN's support was really helpful in keeping up with Netflix's kikery in that they would tell you which of their servers were not being actively blocked. I am on Mullvad now though.

Yep, they consistently go against remakes for rare games like these because "lel no one will buy it". They're probably also the ones who complain about the "soulless" ports and remakes already made so their precious metal doesn't drop down in value.

thief has spoken, ladies and gentlemen

imagine being Apple, and trying to sue other businesses because they also use rectangle models or apps for their phone after trying to copyright shapes, YEARS, after the first rectangle shaped smart phone.

>waah you're a thief!!

thanks for proving my point. cope.

It's a sad state when people see an anti-capitalist anarchist and instantly assume communism. That's some bad education. Original person they replied to here: irrelevantly I happen to be a communist but I could've just as easily been a syndicalist it other economic system you haven't considered because capitalism has set itself up as the default and seemingly necessary in school and work. The truth is we're the working class that don't own property that generates capital so it's in our best interest to stick together and not bootlick these corporate lizards.

>ROMs I guess. Especially if that particular game isn't available for purchase anymore and/or the original devs wouldn't make money off a purchase of the game

I think the only company who has been anal about ROM distribution has been Nintendo, and only because they've been working on re-releasing their old games in their Virtual Console and Nintendo Online services. Now if only people could actually play Mike Tyson's Punch Out without downloading a ROM or paying hundreds for a cart, wouldn't that be nice?

imagine paying for something you can get for free, im sure you retards would pay for air if you could

This but unironically. Streaming music sites pay artists terribly. If you truly want to take the "moral route", you would buy albums.

Patents and copyrights are violations of liberty.

Attached: 96f.jpg (480x360, 17K)

An eye for an eye makes the world goes blind.

Imagine being Apple losing a lawsuit on grounds of name copying against a small mexican company which sold a product called iFone years before the iPhone was even released. That turd of a company and their forced propietary bullshit is the biggest cancer in the electronic industry.

Actually the free market is communist if it doesn't benefit corporations

Supposedly piracy even helps sales according to a study in the EU. I wonder what is up with copyright extensions, shouldn't works be in public domain after 15 years? Why is Mickey Mouse still owned by Disney? It's a problem when rules don't apply to everyone equally.

Neither spotify or deezer has anime songs, though.

>If you truly want to take the "moral route", you would buy albums.

But why buy albums when people are already paying a monthly subscription anyway? Good for the musicians or groups who can actually sustain themselves with concerts and such, but I can see how the industry has become even worse for the smaller or rising ones.

who cares man. I give a good chunk of money that I spend to the government any nobody cares about some fucking Japanese company or mexican shit. Who gives a fuck about third worlders they deserve to get fucked over with their worse quality products.
Piracy helps sales since people talk about pirated stuff and then others buy them.

truly seething. Grow a pair.

Who gets off from CGI porn good god it's so ugly and uncanny.

Never, at any point since I started downloading MP3s on Napster in the late 90's at the age of 10, did I EVER think what I was doing was legal.
I've been pirating for over 20 years.
Try and fucking stop me.

>waaah thief!

seethe harder bitch

The only thing keeping most companies making money is that they own the rights to exclusivity of ideas and knowledge that are easilly replicable infinitely.

If copywright and IP law didn't exist they wouldn't be able to profit so they must keep knowledge from the public to be able to steal more change from your pocket.

>I wonder what is up with copyright extensions, shouldn't works be in public domain after 15 years? Why is Mickey Mouse still owned by Disney?

Disney bribes the government to extend copyright every time Mickey is at risk of going public.

>It's not piracy when I do it

>legally buy product
>"akshually you're just renting it, and at any time we can take it away if you say something we disagree with"
>massive layers of DRM to keep you from copying it or even tinkering with it

I am curious as to where paying to have access to the internet and mainly popular file sharing sites like Youtube plays in all this?

>I wonder what is up with copyright extensions, shouldn't works be in public domain after 15 years? Why is Mickey Mouse still owned by Disney? It's a problem when rules don't apply to everyone equally.

>As of 2019, copyright has expired for all works published in the United States before 1924. In other words, if the work was published in the U.S. before January 1, 1924, you are free to use it in the U.S. without permission. These rules and dates apply regardless of whether the work was created by an individual author, a group of authors, or an employee (a work made for hire).
>Because of legislation passed in 1998, ""no new works fell into the public domain between 1998 and 2018 due to expiration"". In 2019, works published in 1923 expired. In 2020, works published in 1924 will expire, and so on.
>For works published after 1977, if the work was written by a single author, the copyright will not expire until 70 years after the author’s death. If a work was written by several authors and published after 1977, it will not expire until 70 years after the last surviving author dies.

fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/public-domain/welcome/

From what I understand, that 1998 legislation is what allowed Disney to keep hold of most, if not all of their current works, including Mickey Mouse, especially since the company itself still exists and is still currently using it.

same goes for the ultima games. i remember them being free as well on gog a few years ago.

Buying subscriptions is a lot more convenient to the user, just like pirating a game is. But they both end up harming the people who worked on the media since you're enjoying content without giving them the money they deserve for it. A person concerned about "morality" would go out of their way to monetize their favorite artists and developers through buying games and buying albums. Regardless, artists and developers will keep getting fucked over and the only people truly profiting are the record labels and publishers, and no amount of individual purchasing choices will change that. So why worry about the immorality of pirating when the industry is immoral by default?

Is there anything more satisfying than seeing jobless poorfag neets foaming at the mouth because they think they're entitled to free games by stealing from game developers, that they themselves refuse to support?

Worthless parasites detected. You know I'm right. Get a job

seething lol

>Any exposure is good exposure

I got it, I just don't care

Yeah it was more of a rhetorical question. Both sides have ugly faces, as can be seen in the pharmaceutical industry.

This is what should be illegal. There is a reason why copyright should fall after a reasonable time and Disney raped that idea for profit.

yes, the Eu proved it

Question to all the anti-piracy advocates: how am I harming Sega if I play pic related on an emulator?

Attached: 51T0AGBARVL._SY445_.jpg (318x445, 39K)

>A person concerned about "morality" would go out of their way to monetize their favorite artists and developers through buying games and buying albums.

This most of all is what I agree, if someone who pirates a game or song truly enjoys a product he's more prone to actually purchase it to support the developers because it's in his belief that they deserve the money. Nowadays in an industry where demos are almost non-existant and game """journalists""" do nothing but shill and put in a pedestal the newest and most hyped AAA game, I can't blame people who want to pirate something in fear of ending wasting money on a game of subpar quality made popular by streamer shilling.

no since if you bought it today it would be from a used sale so if you buy it no money goes to seag anyways.

What a fucking revelation, the illegal thing I’m knowingly going out of my way to do is illegal? Fuck and I’ve been convinced this whole time I was just borrowing these games.

It's not. Video games don't make money from theater showings, concerts, tv syndication, web ads, radio spotify or Crunchyroll deals like movies/music/tv/porn/anime do. Piracy hurts video games moreso than all of these combined.
Just grow a pair and admit you're a thief.

That doesnt change the fact its illegal since there are no built in taxes in the US which would be going directly to Israel like all US goods.

Implying i care

That's like saying it's illegal to make a copy of a game you bought because that copy won't be giving money to israel.

Oh wait, companies actually try and push that narrative.
