please don't launch into ridley comparisons when i say this, but designwise i do not agree with shrinking down porky's mecha (in EB or M3 form) to fit him in as playable. As I imagine it in my mind it just... wouldn't look right. If it were his EB form, his mecha literally has one sprite and it's obviously supposed to be like three times Ness or Porky's size. if you shrunk it down he may as well not be in the mecha at all. How would it do nuanced animations like dodging and rolling? If they used M3 Porky that's even worse, since it is implied he can barely do much of anything due to his extreme age. there were even unused sprites showing that if his mecha's glass case broke he'd actually die. that white on his face is an elderly man's beard.

in the meantime, though, all the erdrick speculation has gotten me interested in dq. is dq3 the best place to start, or is playing 1 and 2 necessary to get 3?

3 is a pretty good place to start, but you'll get a lot more out of it if you play 1 first, which is about 10 hours long. 2 isn't really all that necessary, and the best version of 1 is either the snes or mobile version. 3 is one of the absolute best in the series, and the Snes version is by far the best version. The mobile version of 3 is missing some content. after that, 5 is also a very strong contender for best in the series as well so I would recommend that one after 3, specifically the ds version if you can get hold of it.
