I thought it played fine, but I wasn't a fan of it's segmented level-based design. I'd rather just have one big castle to explore with maybe a few side areas here and there. I also thought the quest system was pretty dumb. On a side note, OoE probably had the weakest final boss in the series so hopefully they don't disappoint in that regard. In a perfect world, we'd get a castle like SotN, with an inverted version that's not annoying to traverse and offers substantial changes besides bosses and enemy placement.

While it's an improvement, some things like Miriam sitting on the couch still need work. It looks as if Miriam is a mime, pretending to sit, rather than actually sitting. At least I'm not seeing her reach the couch, it looks as if she's just sitting in front of it.

I am optimistic. It will be a metroidvania by Iga, with a smaller budget than the Konami ones, but it certainly is something I wanted to see.

Man, I stopped giving a fuck ever since I saw they were doing it in 3D. 3D for a side scroller os a fucking mistake. Literally the only advantage it has is you can move in a 3D space, if you are ising 2D gameplay, sprites are 100000x more aesthetic. The Metroid 2 remake lost me cause of that shit too. It just never looks or feels as good to play. I was hoping like it would look like the original conceptual renders.

Samus Returns' problem isn't the fact that it's 3D, but the low fidelity. It all looks like blurry shit, and that's a problem regardless of whether it would be 2D or 3D.

Well, the result was still an unaesthetic mess that would have been way better with 2D art, regardless as to the reason. You have to put so much effort into 3D to make it look nice. Saying "3D is easier" is just devs being lazy.

Very positive. Take a look at the catacombs. You can see the "lava" is just a 3D object on the forefront which emits light. This is why the sprites closer to it are brighter. The same happens in the chapel, anywhere where the sky is visible, some of the enemies in the library are blatantly 3D. It's all 3D objects.

Ingenious, and is the reason why SOTN has the sense of depth it has.

Samus returns problem is that Mercury steam effectively did nothing for it but tack on needless abilities.

No one in the in-game art and animations department have no talent/skills for this shitstained game. All the budget went into marketing which includes this shill thread

It can work, devs just don't have the skill/engines yet. IMO it's the cloth and hair physics. They either need to start keyframing it, which no one wants to slave over, or there needs to be an engine that can simulate both wind and realistic movement of hair.

Lighting also sucks by comparison. Even middleware 2D games had the equivalent of AAA 3D lighting/shading if you directly transfered it.

It can be done, but it's not quite there yet.

IGA is a cool dude in my book, he knows what he wants to make and he tries to do it, even if what I've seen of Bloodstained is a little lackluster.
I still think breaking down the moveset into tons of different weapons with few attacks instead of a singular weapon with tons of combinations is a mistake, however. Getting a new weapon with one attack, two if you're lucky, was always underwhelming to me in SotN. The goddamn greatswords attack the same as regular swords, for god's sake.

Will we ever have modern sprite based game with actual art direction? Devs nearly all get lazy with this and assume the sprites themselves are an art direction.

This game along with Mighty No 9 and Yooka Laylee were suppose to bring gaming back and show big publishers that there is a market for games like these. Then Mighty No 9 came out and failed, then Yooka Laylee came out and failed. So it's only natural to think that the third game that was leading the charged would also end up being sub par.

Why would they? No special move affects a button that would lead to an undesired jump, and the platforms are not narrow enough that you'd risk falling by inputting them. It's really a non-issue.

That would just be souls/crystals though. Most classic extra weapons just become that, similar with the few moves he gained over time.

I don't have any beef with the game using 3d models.

I think Iga got what bugged people- which was the fact that Miriam and the foreground objects didn't pop anywhere near enough compared to the backgrounds. 3d spaces + 2d plane requires you make foreground objects pop VERY strongly for players know what the fuck they're interacting with and the original visual design didn't do that.

Also 60+ FPS 3d models can have kind of a cheap look without very strong visual design where 16-24FPS sprite-work does a lot of work on its own even at really low resolutions.

I just hope this game doesnt force a male love interest to appease the incels

None of the games have hitstun. You don't need hitstun to have weight. None of the dark souls games have it and they have one of the most weighted animations out there.
Hitstun is just a cheap way of adding fake weight and compensating for poor animations.

What devs need to do is stop using mocap and start applying 2d animation techniques to 3d animation.

The old sprite masters have all retired and new ones are in short supply. It also takes a lot more time and effort (which equals money) to make sprites.

The original teasers for Bloodstained came out almost a full year before the kickstarter actually happened. My hype will not die.
From what I know Iga was actually well liked at Konami, and aside from the poor sales his games experienced at the end there he got on relatively well with the higher ups, to the point that when he finally did leave it was on positive terms. He still doesn't speak badly of them in interviews to this day.

Less frames. Seriously, smooth animations for attacks are cancer to weight and momentum.

For example, an animation which updates every 2 frames will look heavier and faster than an animation which updates every frame. So if you had a animation which is 60 frames long, cut out every other frame, then double the remaining frames. You basically want to trick people into seeing something that's not there, rather than actually show it.

It's why a lot of sprite based games feel more weighty, because creating 60 frames for 1 60 frame animation is extremely time consuming and expensive, so they only make like 12 frames and stretch them across how many frames they need for a full animation. It's also where a lot of people going from 2D to 3D fuck up on as well, because they make everything too smooth because it's much easier to now, and they lose the power from the animations.

You want snappy, not smooth.

i'm talking about an answer to the gameplay in the latest video,i havent folowed this game closely but i remember playing one of the demos some years ago and it was pretty average and remember lots of niggers bragging about it

To add: Most of these comments come from third party witnesses, a friend of a friend of a friend. Because people steal things the Switch used for demonstration were houses inside isolated boxes, so of course the dumb things would overheat. We still don't know for sure how it even plays.

It plays exactly like SotN which is what the kickstarter was sold on, and the early demo was the first area of the game where you don't have access to the requisite movement abilities and more varied weapons. The main complaints with the gameplay was that Miriam's jumps were floaty, and they've already addressed that in later demos by making her fall faster.

One of the Stretch Goal promises was that it would be the largest castle yet in an Iga game.

There's an accessory already in the Beta Demo that increases movement speed. Feels around 20% faster.

The closest I can think of is Mighty No. 9 fiasco where it took over a year after the game's release for people to get all their backer rewards, but from what I can remember Fangamer issued a statement that it was because Comcept constantly ghosted on them and wouldn't send them the necessary materials or approvals for designs.

Pixel sprites are still very efficient to produce today if you stick to lower res (third strike is like the highest you should ever go if you're still using pixels imo, don't go the KOF13 route), so the idea that it's wholly more expensive isn't entirely accurate. It really depends on what the game's goals are. The custom equipment and cinematic cutscene stuff seemed like a priority for Iga with Bloodstained, which are much harder to do witrh 2D art, so 3D was just the more practical route for him overall.

Finding artists that can produce pixels at a good quality and a tight budget actually isn't too hard, but finding enough of them that can be flexible with any art direction and produce on a quick schedule is where things get tough. That's why a lot of games with good pixel art today are basically passion projects from either a single artist like Owlboy or a very tight knit group like GalaxyTrail. Then you've got a company like WayForward that's able to pull contractors together in small bursts but usually not for anything too ambitious.

It uses the same speed and motion as the 2D games. The Igavanias were pretty floaty in general and 3D tends to rely on faster moves for a sense of weight.

While the Igavania's were always pretty floaty, they've made it worse in 3D by making the animations too smooth. Even in the gif you've shown, you can see the sword swing isn't a smooth motion. The mid swing only has around 3 frames-ish.

Then you get stuff like Aria's big circular tweens for its greatswords. When it's 2D you're far more likely to immediately forgive its weightlessness and focus on its gameplay function. Bloodstained in general, while its animations aren't the greatest, has focused on faithfulness to the speed and pacing of Symphony and its successors and it shows in the enemy patterns and animations.

They probably could have improved it by making the swing itself faster while leaving the trail and hitbox out for longer, leaving the final pose to linger to keep the overall attack the same length.

While I am excited, gotta agree with you there on the smooth animations make it worse. It's not really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it'll need time to get used to.

I have never played any of these kinds of games, what should I start with?
I tried Hollow Knight, but it got boring after 10 hours. Running around the same locations and killing the same enemies over and over again without any new moves or weapons or abilities or any sort of customization that actually changes gameplay made it boring for me. I might be wrong about HL though, redpill me on it, and I might try it again.

i think you should try Aria of Sorrow first, IIRC it has the smallest castle so backtracking is minimal
starting with Symphony of the Night is also acceptable considering its was the first one to release, but it starts to overstay its welcome once you reach the second half

You can pretty much start from anywhere as long as it's a 2D Castlvania.

If you want a metroidvania, Symphony of the Night is usually the default starting point.

june is just the release date. did they confirm it'll be physical already? i don't think they're done with the stretch goal content yet, so if it's physical now, it'll be an incomplete copy requiring day one patches and downloads in the near future.

I hope this means they'll be shipping the physical backer releases early to match retail. I'll never forget how pissed the backers were when Comcept flubbed the backer code releases until after the game was out and available for anyone to grab at retail.
