south games are twice as long by default but because of the minimum 30k score requirement east games get dragged to the same length most of the time anyway so on average there isn't a difference. beyond that the difference is that you get more points for wins and there's more skill involved because rushing to yakuhais or low scoring riichis isn't really viable as a winning strategy.

Targeting players should not be against the rules though. There's been many times when I wanted to ron a specific player, and if that rule did not exist I could skip on tiles played by other players. It is risky because the player I am targeting might never discard my winning tile, thus I would lose the opportunity to win.

You have to keep in mind that Mahjong was and still is a gambling game first and foremost. The rules ARE there to help stop people from tag-teaming. There are legitimate times when you would only want to target one player and not another, but having two people colluding was a much more major problem in the jansou.

if your hand's already worth 5k+ it's probably fine keeping it concealed. Also it lets you discard tiles if you sense someone else is close to tenpai and has a much better hand than you

If your hand has another yaku, you can choose to not call riichi when you're ready so people don't see it coming. You miss out on some potential points by not calling it, but it lets you be stealthy about being in tenpai and it also lets you change your hand up or fold if you need to.

You know all those times you draw a red 5 after riichi and wish you could swap it out for your normal 5? That's one advantage of not calling riichi.

Ron is when someone plays the tile you need. You take all points from that person.
Tsumo is when you draw the winning tile yourself. Everyone will give you points, and the dealer will give twice as many as the other two players.

If you mean the calculation by score, it's pretty complicated and you're better off researching it on your own.
If you mean by who loses points, there are two ways to win, Ron and Tsumo. Ron means that someone played your winning tile and you "stole" that tile from them. They pay you whatever your hand is worth. Tsumo means you draw your winning tile, and all other players split the bill.
East is also known as the dealer, and dealer both pays out extra points if they get Ronned and receieve extra points for winning.

Yes, that's my point. It is brain-dead easy to defend in 1-on-1 and the show points this out as early as Ishikawa, but the way they resolve it is by having Akagi's opponent abandon defense because he cheats or uses magic. In reality the full depth of mahjong is with 4 expert players contesting at once.

No coming back from a difference like that unless you're an anime protagonist, and still finishing the match while losing is more respectable than disconnecting. So the best you can do for your own sake is at least make it quick.

A ron is still a discard, for all purposes you are doing the same as a Pon/Chi (opening your hand), so why would you be able to win from it if you have no Yaku? Riichi is the answer. It also enables your hand to be of higher magnitude with Ura Doras.

At the end of the day, Riichi is just a Yaku.

Now about the damaten (people winning without declaring tenpai) it's another strategy. It's a more elaborate one that serves different purposes in different situations, for example:

>you don't Riichi a Yakuman, it makes the other players play safe and not deal into you
>you are winning and you want to secure the win, so you don't lock yourself into dealing to someone else and if you fear roning you, you fold by breaking your tenpai
>your wait is really poor (46) and you want to wait for a better one (34 or 67)

Texas Hold'Em is very boring for me.
I used to play it a lot for money, and I, like anyone else who isn't an amateur, would play four or five games simultaneously with relative success. And even then I would still multitask something on the side like anime. Anyone can do that because it's a very simple game and the decision making is very simple. Playing live poker is not so easy but solely because of the psychological aspect.
Mahjong on the other hand is so fucking brain intensive. I feel actual pressure on my brain when playing because I can't concentrate on everything I need, not even in my dreams would I be able to play two games at the same time since I can't even think everything in a single one.

If the player to your left discards a tile that completes a sequential run in your hand, you can take it and then discard one. Your hand is then 'open' same as pon which limits your score.

Here's how the scoring chart works in Riichi Mahjong

When you win, you look at your hand, and award points, called "Fu". It starts with
20 - For winning
+ 2 - Tsumo
+10 - Closed Ron

Then you look at your wait:
+ 2 - Anything except an open wait (You have two consecutive tiles waiting for a tile on either side, like a 34 waiting on a 2 or 5)

Then your pair:
+ 2 - If the pair had value (what they mean by this is if you had a third tile, would you have a yaku? If yes, you have a value pair)

Finally, look at your sets:
+ 2 Pon of simple tiles (2-8)
+ 4 Pon of Terminal/Word tiles
+ 8 Kan of simple tiles
+16 Kan of Terminal/Word tiles
x2 bonus per set if you did not steal any of it, not even for ron.

Add ALL of that shit up, then round up to the next 10.

Then you double that shit for every single han you have. Then the Japanese double it twice more for literally no reason, and those are your Base Points. For you math nerds, that looks like this:
Base Point = Fu x 2^(han + 2)

Everyone then pays you the BP rounded up to the next hundred. East pays and receives twice the BP before rounding. If someone has ron'd, the person who discarded bears the burden of every single player at the table.

EXAMPLE: 40 fu, 2 han = 640 BP.

Winner of the round is a Non-Dealer. The dealer pays 640x2 which is 1280, then rounded up, making it 1300. The other players pay 640 rounded up, making it 700.

BONUS ROUND: Honba (round continuation)
For every round that East wins, he stays east, and a marker is placed on the table. For every marker, each player adds in an additional 100 points to their score. This is included in the payment for the player ron'd.

Example from above, but there are two honba: Everyone pays an additional 200, or the ron'd player pays 600 extra.

This is also how Pinfu works. Pinfu means "No points", so it's 20 points, + win condition, and then all runs with an open wait and valueless pair

So you can use them are a normal north tile, or you can call "Kita". You place it to your side, you get a bonus han, and then you get to draw from the dead wall to replace the tile, which is why the dora indicator is set 5 tiles back instead of 3.

It's 750,000 copper per summon with a 5% chance for character. However since the only real f2p way to earn copper is through ranked silver and higher, you'll also be earning item chests as you play there, and can convert those into the same things you'd spend the copper on. So in reality it'll be less.

You can reveal it, set it aside and take a replacement tile, and it counts as a dora. It's basically how flowers and seasons worked in the Chinese game.
The reason for it is nobody ever sits North in 3P, so it's another use for North tiles.

If you draw one you can set it aside and they count as a dora. Then you draw a replacement so your hand still has the right number of tiles.
