Lower budget and technology means they have to use different methods to convey what they want, and the shortcuts that devs use often leave blanks for your imagination to fill in.
In hollow knight there is a three second scene where a characters sprite moves it's head less than an inch to look towards a different character standing next to them.
On it's own, it means fuck all.
Except combined with small background and textual clues like this throughout the game, you are lead to the conclusion that character A cared for character B and can extrapolate that there were similar scenes like this throughout their time together, which ultimately adds another layer of tragedy to the zombie-aids-ridden shitfest that is hollow knights backstory.
