I could see this character being in a game where the environments are all made to look like scratchy pencil sketches that animate and move. The only colour would be from attack effects; red for melee, blue for magic, green for movement. The goal could be returning to stolen colour and life to the land.

Almost every game protagonist you guys labeled as "cancer indie cliche" is white either because

>it's the best color to portray one's innocence in an otherwise dark setting (Rain World, Hollow Knight, Ori)

Is there really a massive difference between the protagonist of Hyper Light Drifter and Hollow Knight? Both are silent sword wielding heroes on a self destructive mission to save their worlds. One just happens be pale with big black eyes.
Ori shows more emotion than both protags of HK and HLD. The art department was clearly talented and jammed tons of detail into backgrounds and other characters, but they settled on another pale, big black eyed, humanoid. The designers clearly wanted to establish an emotional connection to Ori while other games like Rain World embrace the emptiness that a ghostly figure creates.
I don't think it's a matter of visual detail relating to personality of the character. I'd sooner believe that they were all conceived on a chalk board.

Firstly, minecraft is a first person game so you don't even see yourself most of the time
Secondly, the protagonist still looks basic as fuck and is the closest thing to a self-insert you can possibly get. Notch never thought "Hmm, maybe I should make the main character just a bunch of white blocks. No wait, that would be too easy, let me channel my creative energy and try again". Steve is just a regular human with no distinct features that has no emotional connections to the world surrounding him.
Thirdly, you can and also encouraged to customize your skin. Your example is shit, try again.

Even with his cyan shirt and brown skin tone, Steve stands out as a character. It's not creative, but at least there IS some effort to it. He's not dreadfully boring to look at. Rain World, Ori, Hollow Knight, Baba is You, all those games didn't need their protagonists to be white featureless animal things. It's a design choice of simplism, and it's boring.

Hollow Knight's protagonist is objectively better designed than Steve.
