I was going to do dub because I was worried about subtitles distracting me as I played when those guys talked during the tutorial. The thing is, just listening to the tutorial people, you could tell the dub was shockingly bad. Go further on and characters like Kuro have zero voice direction in the dub. It's a different world from the Japanese audio, its crazy

I played through the game in both dubs and English is honestly better. it has a lot more emotion and care put into it, plus the voices fit the character better. The ONLY place where I think the english dub is bad is during the first encounter with Tengu, where he asks Sekiro's name in a calm voice and then half a second later shouts "TELL ME YOUR NAME!", but that's a mistake on the sound engineer's part where they forgot to put a pause after the first line.

Translations in these games are typically good enough to convey whats being said, but they need to be rewritten. It's a meme about anime/weeb talk, but a lot of the cringey lines are due to translation. Theyre conpletely fine in Japanese, but often the corresponding words/phrases in English translate meaning but not frequency and situational use.

If you watch DBZ with eng va/eng subtitles on you'll notice it doesnlt match. The subtitles are direct translations and you can tell by how stiff they are. The writers and voice actors etc at Funimation changed things to make it better.

The biggest problem with dubs is that in the vast majority of games, there's someone that sounds absolutely atrocious. Even is the rest of the cast is somewhat decent, that one character will ruin the whole thing for you. The most flagrant example is Fuuka from Persona 3, and she happens to be constantly talking during the battles. In Sekiro's case, it's the MC.

This is not the case. In japan, VAs are basically jack-of-all-trades entertainers who do it all - singing, dancing, acting, promoting the product and more. To make it in an industry as cutthroat as the Japanese VA industry you have to be both very very good (because they receive royalties and it's a paycheck for life if the product makes it) and very very dedicated.

Also most people don't really understand acting at all and think that the performance is entirely in the words. I've worked with actors and in theater for over five goddamn years and I still meet people who ask things like "why doesn't this scene in a foreign language have subtitles, it ruined my enjoyment of the product", even when the play is literally about being a fish out of water and it was to allow the audience to experience the same feelings as the leads.

People don't actually want to interact with art, they merely want to consume it.

Except not and I will tell you why. All of the Souls games have amazing audio work and that is because it is personally done by Miyazaki himself. I saw a documentary. He literally has his own small soundproof studio room where he does the audio, mixes and masters and everything. It's also why all the games reuse so many audio effects and ambient sounds. Miyazaki is kinda of a hack and a one trick pony. He works with a set of voice English voice actors who mostly repeat thorough the games, but for Sekiro he got Japanese actors because that is what makes sense. He worked on the Jap dub. The English dub since it doesn't use the same English actors was likely outsourced and done in America (yuck), which means he likely didn't do the audio edition, mixing and directing for it either. So if you go with that dub you are directly going against GODzaki's artistic vision and not getting the full experience. It's why the dub no matter the quality would stand out against everything else Godzaki touched in that game. You're just gobbling Activision cock as the dub was likely made by them. Don't question it. I'm a Souls expert.

Hamill is 100% correct in that voice actors ARE often marginalized unfairly for being a "voice actor" instead of a "real actor", but this stigma comes from the fact that very, very few voice DIRECTORS bother to actually direct, instead preferring to do one and done takes every single time. The girl actually sounds like someone trying to imitate a little girl int he english dub, you deaf fucker. In the jap dub it just sounds like someone told a 35 year old to speak into a microphone and call it a day. I'm not even trying to say the entire dub is better than the sub, but the girl sounds like an actual child in English.

I think Sekiro is better with English VAs, but I always play based on whichever language the Director intended.
So I play with JPN VAs.
