I actually don't know all the versions of RO. I played from alpha until PVP was introduced. Basically the game went to shit at that point.

But, PVP is something desired by most people, so I would say everything that RO had when PVP was introduced, with any subsequent updates that fixed PVP so it wasn't shit (if it was ever even improved at all)

Never got into RO and something I always wondered, how the hell did gear work? Seemed like there were only a few items for each slot (unlike every other MMO where there's a gear treadmill) and then you just carded them?

It was a slowly developing system. You would get the gear from a drop (of course something like 0.001%), hope it had a card slot, put the appropriate meta card in it (those also had shit drop rates), then you would upgrade them with rare items to get +1, +2, etc. The success rate dropping with each increase. An arduous fucking process, but the payoff was high. You'd feel like a badass going through the top dungeons and soloing shit while weaker people with their heal bitches would watch in awe.

The defence number was the actual % number the incoming baka would get reduced on top of that came vitdef reduction (flat ) and card effects.
Every upgrade have an additional 0.3% Def I think +10 on each item being max.
The system was rather simple once you knew all that. It also meant that once you have a +8 slotted chainmail you were pretty much set. Like stuff actually had value long term wise... But then the game has hyper inflation and later strange sets and each expansion increased hp and DMG of creatures.
I remember my frustration that none of my rebirth character where getting invited to biolaps 3 parties. Or any of the late pre renewal content.
Like I miss the game but I do not miss what was shit about it too. So much was just badly designed.
Still imagine coming from this game into wow and being told that with every expansion all your items you spent hours to get no matter how good are now useless...
The drop rates when offset that it was a party game: your tank who create mob trains of 10-30 creatures at once, several tanks in a party and you would churn through 100s of mobs in an hour making the low drop chance okay-ish and again imagine my face when being told that the pinnacle of combat fun in wow is the slow grid of single mobs one after another...

There were actually a lot of items, with a lot of effects, but most arent visible in your sprite, and the ones that are visible, people usually used the meta ones.

Think the following: Each item has its own stats, and the rares the item, the stronger the base stats, but the LEAST card slots it had.
It led to an interesting meta where super low level items with multiple slots were worth more than high level rare items with no slots, because some cards were super fucking broken.

Most people dont feel like putting hundreds of hours into a single character in a shady private server with 300 other players, so servers started adding larger xp rates.

this, I tried to like renewal too, but ultimately they shit all over the classes with renewal. Take knight for instance, you go from having agi knight build or spear build, and in renewal you change to rune knight, and you are suddenly a faggot INT stacking dragon breath spamming piece of shit or you are nothing, ignition break and crit build are both trash compared to it with crit only mattering if you have like 20 billion to spend on its gear, and even then its still shitty because renewal is all about AoE.

Also assassins turned into whirlwind barbs from diablo for fucking no reason and also have the same hp modifier as royal guards (????)

They changed the sprite for most items and added cards for mobs that didn't have them when they released the transcendental classes patch.

biolabs doujins are mostly about the mobs fucking each other or get fucked by the scientists.

both. the mvp version is the ghosts of the real ones that are sustained by the artificial ymir’s heart shard inside them. the non-mvp version is clones produced by those shards.

Easily Alarm. In iRO, from 50 onwards, that was what I was killing.

Great music, perfect art, great community, and a varied and beautiful world for starters. RO was also designed really well in that it was an RPG that never held your hand and would always challenge you to do better, unlike WoW. Solo-play was always a tough proposition, and you always needed friends. Also, there was a ton of complexity to the game mechanics. For example, early Alchemist had their Fire Bomb and Bio Cannibalism skill affected by card effects - I was a menace with invisible (half-implemented at the time) stunfire (which also stacked) and maneating plants that stun enemies. It was a blast.
