does the game sort of teach you
There's a short tutorial, but i'm not sure how much it actually teaches you.
I guess that's fine if I can just reference it back whenever. Mahjong always felt like one of those games where the best way to learn is to go straight in and keep doing it until you get a hang of it and get familiar with everything.
biggest rule you need to remember is the yaku requirement
This game is especially good for learning because there's a shitload of people currently playing who have no idea what they're doing, especially in the morning when the chinese are on ranked bronze east matches are your best bet.
That coupled with all the helpers from the UI and everything in english i'd say it's the best way to learn.
You can create a private room to play against AI opponents to test the waters.
Don't mindlessly Pon, Chi, or Kan everything your opponents discard because it opens up your hand. For now, get used to playing with a closed hand because that's often how you get more points and secure a Yaku. You can start calling your opponent's discards more once you get the hang of things and memorize some of the easier Yaku. All Simples, Triplet of Dragons, and a Triplet of Winds that matches the round or your seat are easy to get and practice with, and expect most of your opponents in the Bronze rooms to also use this strategy.
