Hard truth that no one is willing to admit: Every Pokemon game is at least pretty damn good, though some are let down by some design choices or failings (Gen 1s god awful writing, Gen 7s overuse of unskippable cutscenes, Gen 4s slow ass UI). None of them are bad though.

This honestly. Actively trying to gimp yourself is too much work I just start streamlining the game as much as I can, and it all usually happens after the first gym. Starting a pokemon game is fun. It kind of dies off and becomes tedious once you're lv30+ every time.
