Smash Ultimate is literally peak soul, retard. If you kill Inkling with a move that instantly causes death (i.e certain final Smashes or the Death's Scythe item) when they die, you can see a little squid soul float upwards just like in Splatoon. Ultimate is full of stuff like this, nearly every character has some loving reference dropped onto them and even things like Assist Trophies and Stages are also carefully crafted.
To use Splatoon as an example again, the Moray Towers stage has a night time version with actual Splatfest Ink colors all over the stage if you select a song that plays during Splatfest, on top of that, in Time Battle, during the last 30 seconds the song switches to Now or Never like in Splatoon. Furthermore, the Squid Sisters Assist Trophy could have just used Calimari Inkantation for their demo, but they have 3 different songs all with different animations just because.

Just because something is newer doesn't mean it doesn't have soul you fucking inbred cuck.

Assist Trophies got so much shit going on it's hard to understand why are they not characters. At least the ones you can hit.

Bwarl had second most soul in the series, after smash 64. Melee was just production quality. It was the TLoU of melee; all style, just enough substance in the right places, and absolutely nothing that actually breaks new ground.

If the series is so good, why is the representation so shit? I mean with all the games there has to at least popular characters that aren't some variant of a one-handed swordfighter. Are all the popular characters just sword lords?

No it's just way easier to use that kind of character as a template.

I counted and about 14/18 protagonists in the FE series (not counting 3H ones, Robin/Corrin are half) are all one-handed sword lords. Yes, some of them get access to different weapons/mounts with promotions, but a sword is their primary weapon. Nearly all of the main protags are, and main protags are the ones always in the runnings.

It always just felt like Sakurai was getting lazy. Dojo was fucking dedication and the post were great. The Pic of the Day felt like a cop out and they were far less interesting. Honestly, that's kind of been Smash post-Brawl. Just lazy and uninspired.

It helps that they always have a new iteration each game so it's easy to put the most relevant one in. It would be less of an issue if Smash 4 didn't add both Roy and Corrin.

They always choose the main characters of the games and almost all the main characters are sword users. It's just a trope within the series for the protagonist to wield a sword.
