How was colors?
Sonic unironically continued to even exist after 2006, nothing can kill it. Its fans will literally forgive anything.
Colors is honestly pretty decent. There's nothing about it that's really offensive or bad. It's just kind of average and safe.
World design is great, music is good, gameplay is basically a watered-down Unleashed/Generations, final boss is actually good though easy. Most Sonic games have glaring flaws, but Colors is fairly consistent. You'll get higher highs and lows lows with the other games.
They are even remaking 06 kek

That's not true. No one forgives Sonic 06 or Secret Rings.
The games genuinely improved past this point.
Unironically saved the series until Boom ruined everything again
Considering half of 06's team was pulled away during crunch to cobble this together it can be partially to blame. That said, I'd sooner blame Sega's incompetence than anything Sonic Team did at that time. I don't know if I'd say it killed Sonic as we know them but it very well might've killed Sonic Team as we knew them.
Boom is literally a side game. I'd argue Forces did more damage than Boom.
Literally this. SEGA's incompetence is fucking astounding.
Boom was 06 2.0 in terms of how much people threw shit at it. It's also arguably a worser game than 06 and Forces. Forces did do a shit ton of damage to boostfags reputation. If a new boost game was announced no one would bother defending it
I've never played more than 20 minutes of a 3D sonic game, but I unironically prefer some of Boom's designs to regular modern (post adventure) Sonic. Knuckles looks awful but they're not all terrible. Sonic Advance is still my favourite set of games in the series.
>GOD TIER
Adventure 1/2
>GREAT TIER
Unleashed, Colors
>OKAY TIER
Heroes, Generations, Lost World
>SHIT TIER
3D Blast, Forces, Secret Rings, Black Knight
>ABOMINATION TIER
06, Shadow the Hedgehog, Boom
You all know it's true
Shadow ain't that bad. It's more mediocre.
Which do you like more 2 or 3?
I think 2's probably a better game overall, but I liked the amount of replayability from the pairing system in 3. Playing as Amy+Cream for example is a much slower paced game since your hammer kills momentum and you can't spin dash. You have a lot of choice in how you want to approach levels- you can still pick sonic+tails and treat it as standard sonic. I've seen a lot of criticism towards it for some reason. What do you think?
Judging by everything already in it I'd argue that '06 would've been mediocre at best if it had more time. Sonic Team didn't exactly have a clean record at that point. Every modern Sonic game before '06 has some stupid shit holding it back. You can go as far back as fucking Knuckles' Chaotix to find them making shit decision.
2 is my personal favorite. I think 3 gets more criticism because the introduction of hubs caused a major hit to the pace of the action. Also the controls feel a bit looser as compared to 2 which are really tight. In my opinion 3 is the second best in the series, but I can easily see why someone would place it as their favorite.
I'm surprised you're putting LW with Generations. I think Generations is better, but most people act like LW is this absolute trainwreck when it's really just some good ideas mixed with a few shit ones and spotty execution.
EVERYBODY SUPER SONIC RAPING
GOTTA KEEP A PEPPER SPRAY IN HAND
WHEN YOU'RE SUPER SONIC RAPING
THERE'S NO TIME FOR REACHAROUNDS
That's mainly because Sonic Team never sticks to one Formula. Like there has never been a 3D Sonic game starting just Sonic and not having any gimmicks. They do not have faith Sonic can carry an entire title on his own.
It's a fairly solid game all things considered it's just a bit mediocre and is filled with missed execution. I would love it if they brought back the parkour system but actually made it decent
This is LW's, and the Sonic series as a holes problem. Sonic Team doesn't give a concept time to develop or bloom before moving on to the next project, so consistency is sorely lacking.
Is Sonic Mania Plus worth picking up if I only ever cared for 2D Sonic?
It doesn't even have to star just Sonic. If they take cues from the classic series they can have different characters that all play similarly with their own abilities. They'd rather pad the game out with play-styles and bullshit because, like you said, they don't have faith that one play-style can carry the game. Whether it's the actual quality or it getting panned for not being """long enough""", which Sonic games have never been long.
Yes, it’s arguably the best 2D sonic. I’d say 3&K edges it out.
Yes. But keep in mind most of the zones are ones you have played before.
I also recommend the Rush and Advance series. They have problems, but they are good games.
That's the entire point of the game.
I can understand why all three could be seen as favourites, they each excel in different areas. The main reason 2 isn't my overall favourite is I prefer the more slow/deliberately paced Sonic games (1>2 on genesis for example). 2's level design is based around speed and had more autopilot sections that require precise control to maintain. I do prefer it to advance 1 still, and it feels great to learn layouts and play for time. I'm probably in the minority but I always saw Sonic as a series about momentum, not necessarily speed, and 3 has a lot of playstyle flexibility that make different level routes more appealing depending on who you're using. Bosses feel pretty different between characters too. It's a shame some combinations make the game too easy as you can do the pair jump thing to bypass a lot of obstacles.
Definitely worth it. Lots of replay value and just a good time all around
I think its more proof that Sonic Team hasn't spent the time to experiment enough with Sonic nor his friends in 3D.
Forces killed the Boost games reputation, no one we will ever be hyped for new boost game or another Sonic Team take on classic gameplay ever again, the only thing that can save the 3d games now is something like pic related.
Shadow should at least be good tier. There were some great levels in there and i would go as far as to say innovative, concepts like the branching story paths by choosing to do the good/neutral/dark missions and added replayability of it with unlockable weapons and fun secrets. The cgi scenes were amazing too
Colors was well received because seems it was made for a Nintendo audience (a ''subtle'' way to say it's a kids focused game without any difficult)
Yep, get it on steam with the encore DLC for tons of replayability
>Unironically saved the series
>Not Unleashed
Kys, Colors is overrated garbage, it's time to let this meme (and the boost gameplay) die now.
Colors was the germ of Forces.
>repeat the same level 100 times to unlock the actual ending
>slowly look around and shoot enemy missions
>shadow tier level design
Gonna have to hard disagree here
Unleashed is great but normalfags hated it because of the werehog. The reviews were completely shitting on the game when it came out while Colors was the first game that just let you be Sonic the entire game while also getting good reception. It did a lot more for the series from an outsider perspective
Shadow is fun if you don't go for the last story. Shadow would have worked great as a handheld game, doing a quick playthrough of a story and then putting it down till later majorly helps the games pacing.
Branching levels wasn't a fresh idea by the time Shadow was released, and the core gameplay was pretty awful. Level design sucks, controls are imprecise, it's full of bugs and it feels like it was designed from the ground up to be as cringe as possible. Unleashed did a much better job even though on paper it should be a forgettable edgy spinoff compared to the main game of one of the main characters.
