There was a demo of a horror game TBFP did for one of their shitstorms that vaguely reminded me of this, some guy goes into a library and spooky stuff happens there I think.

Of course 9th Gate is more about the owners and pages than the library scenes since it bounces around locations.

So while not the same vein, I feel like The Wolf Among Us could also come close, a Wise but Unwitting Fall Guy going around doing what's technically his profession but mostly how he personally prefers to, with mixed success.
