The unironic answer is Japan scientifically engineers their characters to be appealing. Big eyes+small nose+flawless skin+idealistic personalities
Adam Bennett
No I had it right the first time
Asher Myers
Naw man he's just using a reference.
Jacob Ross
Because they unrionically design characters they want and not characters they have to in order to avoid backlash.
Daniel Cox
Pic unrelated, I assume.
Asher Garcia
>soejima >good character design

Because they have proven time and time again that they're the last creative people on the planet. Maybe not with their narratives, but their designs and art are still superior. you do realize that using frames of an anime as reference to draw the exact same character means literally nothing, right?
Cooper Gomez
makoto is my oneechan
Kevin Cook
>Their designs are always memorable and distinctive
But that’s not what he’s doing, you brainlet. He’s ripping off whole compositions and passing them off as his original work. Referencing is okay, but no one in the art world thinks what Ilya did and continues to do is okay.
Parker Howard
It's redrawing. I really don't get why people get so bent out of shape about this person's art in particular.
The characters from vampire the masquerade bloodlines are more memorable than your weeb shit

Because you cherry-pick
Xavier Rogers
It's just animu design 101. Give them vastly different hairstyles, weird but recognizable colors, and you're all set. Not like I dislike this, mind you.
Parker Peterson
Not really no
Robert Reyes
>used to trace sometimes 5 years ago. >must trace everything he does now.
Ilya doesn't even trace anymore. Ever seen his process videos? He apologized and said he was done doing that shit.

Because Japan is an artist's paradise, it's a huge market of people trying to get ahead with their own personalized styles, characters, etc. It's how they get noticed. You honestly only see the best of the best, you don't see the constant re-tries, re-drawings, scrapped shit, etc. Sometimes you will, but its rare.
Parker Parker
how memorable a character is almost directly proportional to how much porn they get and it's hard to make porn of the "more realistic" 5/10s that the west is pumping out lately. Overwatch is pretty much the only exception
God damn Russians are amazing, are they the next anime superpower?
Liam Ward
Because Japanese people are really insecure about their appearances and make anime characters that look 10x better than the average Japanese female while the west isn’t afraid at all. There’s a reason why dudes in Japan would rather marry anime characters than irl japanese women.
so the reason western characters look ugly as shit is because westerners aren't afraid of the fact that they themselves look like shit?
Nathaniel Jackson
>west >not insecure about attractive females

Don't reply to tripfags, that's what they want.
Gavin Murphy
The honest answer is that this art is always escapism and their society doesn't have progressives and Bible thumpers trying to control people. So this resorts in a greater variety of character art that is somewhat anchored in reality because IRL Japan outside of Shibuya and Kabukichou at opening time is nowhere near this "unique."
All artists do this. All artists use references combined, traced, or straight ripped off in some way. Now sure, this are more on the nose about it considering they're just redrawings, but here is a funny thing, good/bad about art, art is art. It may be a redrawing, but it's still that particular art, just in a different style. It's similar to covers in music, someone may prefer the original, someone may not, simple as that.
Now the difference here is whether credit/reference material was actually given, if not, throw a fit, if so, who cares.
Jacob Reed
>Their designs are always so memorable >always Not even remotely true you lying weebshit.
Connor Cruz
>Because Japanese people are really insecure about their appearances How would you exactly know that? Am not saying your wrong but unless your a Jap it would seem hard to precisely know how they feel about their own appearances. >and make anime characters that look 10x better than the average Japanese female I don't think they go outta their way to make a better looking Japanese female (because lets say the make a character with blonde hair and blue eyes right? Obviously not a Japanese thing), i think they just like to make pretty women, i don't feel like there trying to say anything about their society filled with ugly women, i think. (Also that swings both ways obviously, there are female artists who make beautiful women and good looking men, it's not just the females who get a make-up the boys can look pretty too) >while the west isn’t afraid at all Now this is the part that is just flat out wrong, the west has always been intimated by fictional women, waaay more as of late, the censorship is fucking bonkers. They just hate Japan and sexy women for some reason. >There’s a reason why dudes in Japan would rather marry anime characters than irl japanese women I don't really think thats the reason, they may just be pathetic and have terrible social skills and can't mingle with another female human being so they settle for a fictional chick. I honestly really don't think if a opportunity was presented to one of those pathetic loser that you can actually date a real girl they wouldn't take it.
Lets give OP some leeway, Atlus at least knocked it out of the park largely with P5's designs, 3/4, ehhhh, not so much in a lot of places. Lets at least give him that since he posted a P5 pic.
Luis Peterson
user, logic isn't permitted here. With that said, I think the issue is more that otakus largely see traits in these fictional characters whether waifu or husbando that they latch onto. Lets say they were really fond of Bulma or some shit. Rich, tempter, short hair usually anymore. While exaggerated I think they try to seek that out in real life because they found an attraction to it, realize, real life isn't exactly like that because media exaggerates these features, and then they just stick to the waifu/husbando. Otherwise I think most people don't honestly take it all that seriously outside of a handful of Japanese people and foreigners. It's mostly like, yeah she's waifu material, I can get behind that character, she's got some traits I like in women, and that's that. That's whatever, everyone does that.
Jace Barnes
Nobody cares. You only get one chance, if you blow it you deserve to get fucked.
Jonathan Kelly
artist community sucks dick. Im glad illya is 100x more succesful than you or any of the other people whining about shit from forever ago

Nathan Morgan
I don't really know what to say to this post but, i understand what you're saying. That does make sense that they have ideas of what they want their wife or husband to be based off those characteristics of fictional characters but, obviously its hard to find somebody like that so they just stick with the fiction, yeah that makes sense. It's an interesting dilemma for Japanese society.
I actually kinda like these redraws. I love seeing things redrawn in different styles. Did he claim they were original, or was he open about it being referenced?
Colton Green
Originality is overrated, if you weren't a newfag you'd know that. Getting triggered over someone reshading an image is pathetic.
Joshua Hernandez
yeah go on suck dick, maybe you'll get 25 cents off your next commission.
Michael Ramirez
>Did he claim they were original, or was he open about it being referenced Lmao, bro that do you honestly think? I don't know either, i say probably not because i think that would make his work less popular if he just said he used a reference or something i dunno
You misunderstood OP, he didn't say persona's designs were always memorable, but rather all of japan's.
Jack Howard
Being 'creative' doesn't necessarily make it good. It's why the girls in the party all look like shit compared to Kawakami, Tae and Sae.
Colton Brown
It's a sad one considering anime characters are often portrayed sexually and attracted in a bid to get young people to procreate in real life more, but it's to some extent had the adverse effect. You could also probably look at it like porn, you get desensitized to stuff after awhile, same with movies, violence/gore, romance/romanticized realities, etc. I mean its all a mess of fever dreams and dashed hopes.
Juan Williams
I know what he said, I was being generous to OP and at least giving him P5 was pretty good all around.
Zachary Wright
>anime characters are often portrayed sexually and attracted in a bid to get young people to procreate in real life more user that is just a meme
Ethan Watson
I do a lot of reference/redraw stuff just to learn, seems ballsy as fuck to try and pass any of it off as my own original shit. I figured you'd be less popular if you pulled this shit though.
Josiah Scott
pretty much this, just bias, and cherrypicking
Daniel Gray
Yeah, one product is not far from literally everything ever produced.
Colton Bailey
>Lets give OP some leeway Let’s not. He’s talking about superior Japanese designs while posting fan art made by Americans.
Jordan Harris
westerners can't draw
Andrew Murphy
It honestly seems just like an irreversible problem, because its been so ingrained into their society for such a long time it's just a standard thing now. I honestly can't tell you how to fix something like that, my idea would to be embrace it, but then again that is the problem so what are you gonna do? How can you fix a large amount of people like that so infatuated with the ideas of these fictional characters? It seems impossible.
Yes, he claimed they were originals until he was outted. It's why he stopped using the Kronprinz name
Angel Evans
Oh yeah, i surely remember anime girl #345 from turn based JRPG #657
Nicholas Hughes
Yeah I do.
Jack Jackson
Everyone knows who Mario is though.
Matthew Wood

Ryder Diaz
Agreed, the girls in JRPGs are just cuter and more attractive than those in WRPGs. Now, if only Japanese developers don't forget to include gameplay in their games as well...
He claimed they were originals and then openly criticized someone else for tracing. He's a fucking hack of the utmost degree.
Cooper Peterson
Dumb toukoposter, you can fuck up anything
Colton Turner
oh for fuck's sake
Jacob Scott
this kills the weeb
Ayden Martin
Only some of those are really a problem. The ones where he redraws cover art or iconic poses(like the Phoenix Wright one) are 100% fine because in no way could they ever mislead a reasonable person. I mean there are probably thousands of "redraws" of that pose on the internet. But taking random panels or screencaps is a bit more of an issue if you're not open about what you're doing and have permission for it.
Luke Butler
I honestly don't think the character designs in P5 are that memorable or distinctive. The game is so long that the characters will be burned into your eyesockets, but there's nothing especially remarkable about any of them.
As soon as P6 comes out, P5 will become part of the Soejima goop alongside P4.
Jacob Lewis
Contrary to popular belief, memorable and good have never been necessarily under the same branch. How memorable something is, is always going to be in direct proportion to how exposed to it you have been and that's usually slave to marketing more than anything else.
I don't find the Skyrim default super amazing but I can recognize him and remember him in an instant because those horns have been burned into my brain by video games media as a whole.
I'm willing to bet if you have tons of Persona 5 fanart just readily available in your folder like that then you're definitely gonna find those designs memorable. Yes this even applies Mickey and Bugs and all those classics
By far the best Soejima design. His monster designs were fucking garbage before P5 so having some good ones was a pleasant surprise.
Jaxon Fisher
Are you fucking kidding me? Of all the examples here you choose the phoenix wright one to say that it's just a "reused pose" while that one is LITERALLY traced? He had the fucking audacity to claim these as his own while criticizing someone elsr for tracing. He also pretended to sketch in a cafe while he literally just referenced the picture of a cosplayer online while again, playing innocent. Tracing apologists are the fucking worst. He may be successful but you can only fake it so far, as the movie he's worked on is getting trashed by the japanese.
