PvP sucks in FFXIV because the netcode is shit and there is no room for counterplay. With how long the GCD is you figure stuns would last like 5-8 seconds and not just serve as interrupts. There is no way to actually shut people down, punish people or react appropriately because both the systems and game do not allow you to.

You know shit is fucked if players aren't even where they appear to be, as player movement is like 0.5-0.75s ahead of where they are on your client. You can be following someone directly in melee range and all your abilities will fail to go off because you aren't actually in melee range at all.

I'm always amazed how people are surprised that most things about XIV suck. I presume the biggest factor is the bleeding heart fanbase that defend their years-invested QoL game life because they are too weak to quit the game (like I did).

Anyone should've been aware that PVP went down the shitter when they dumbed down EVERY class giving them only a set of fisher-price pvp-only abilities while taking away any overworld/PVE mechanics for """"balance"""" so that the babies could have a fair fight.

Despite the fact that XIV is 5 years strong and has ZERO (0.00) overworld pvp servers (much less a single zone or two) should tell you all you need to know. Eureka would've been the perfect place for World PVP, yet they drove it safe (and every-other-patch rehashy) like they do for everything else.

Pic related is when I went back to WoW vanilla/bc private servers (no, not nu-WoW which prides itself on being a XIV clone) and ganked the fuck out of people, something I would've LOVED to do to the degenerate fuckbags who played on my XIV servers.

Not on your own, but an organized team can completely shut someone down. Draw-in, stun, silence, sleep, bind. Those are far more than enough to shut anyone down long enough to kill them.

Maybe you could side with the light side (and whoever the main antagonist is), and you fight for territory against the "shadowbringers" side? hmmm.....

This would be far too strong. Good DPS players can burst kill anything other than a tank in less than 2 or 3 GCDs.
PvP in FFXIV isn't about shutting down other players, it's more about taking the opponent by surprise.

XIV pvp can be condensed to one word: sterile. They completely sterilized the system between the time there was one single battleground to the point.

Their attempts at engaging are very crude. I'd say the biggest issue is that you have three teams competing against each other, in which one team can avoid the other two and end up in second while the team that goes against the "winners" ends up in third for even trying. "Put in effort, win third place". It's why every other MMO ever has team vs team, as in real life sports (which XIV pvp is, honestly, just a sport, not a real battle or war).

Down the road, once SE realized that their PVP sucked ass and they worked themselves into a slippery adjusting the classes' fisher-price pvp toolkit (I love to make this analogy but I apologize for insulting Fisher-Price Corp.), their only logical option (by their muddled vision) was to lock QoL cosmetic items behind tedious PVP grinds, all of which I did because I was half decent, but hated every minute of it. The best times were when they locked Towel housing items behind PVP, which promtpted all the terrible ERP players to pvp and get wiped out by people like me, since they needed towels for whatever fucked-up cottage they were planning next (most of them weren't savvy enough to afford mediums or mansions). Before this, they tried to encourage frontline through khloe's weekly book.

I might keep writing if I feel the system deserves more punishment and redpills.

I assumed commendations would always go to tanks and maybe healers, but so far I've been getting them left and right as Lancer and Archer. Do people just give them to characters they think look nice, or what?

I systematically give a comm to my fellow DPS unless the AST babysits me with cards.

I'm not really sure what you even mean by this. Every game has a set of boundaries it works within and mechanics are made with those restrictions in mind. Innovation is bad for MMOs that already have an established playerbase, if you start changing the core mechanics of the game you'll only alienate your audience.

A raid group is eight people, divided into roles. DPS roles job is to do damage therefore their mechanics should revolve around that, doing damage.
Healers have mechanics that require them to manage their healing and aggro.
Tanks have mechanics that require them to manage their cooldowns and aggro.
Those are the "rules" that they create fights with, why is that a bad thing? Go to a restaurant and order a pizza, regardless of toppings it's still pizza but it sure as hell doesn't taste the same everytime. Same goes for raids.

Hm, might start doing that to make dps feel more appreciated. When they don't suck or are a Lalafell, that is.

After considering giving this game a try for a long time, I've been having great fun the past week playing this.
I took some time to set up my keybinds in advance, so I won't have a huge mess of things by the time I get to max level, and instead have some logic between jobs and ability priorities. The amount of abilities is one of the things that made me reluctant to try it before, but with a good setup it doesn't look all that daunting anymore.

But more surprisingly is that, while there's extremely little chat in the open, everyone I've met in a party has been friendly af. You guys weren't kidding.

Because it wasn't boring the first time. You were on an adventure where every zone felt vast as you explored on it foot until you got your first chocobo. You went from being a literal nothing to becoming the god slayer you are now that's in political turmoil with the Garlemead empire and now having to dimension hop. Reminds me a little too much of the guild I was in for a while in WoW, where they were real friendly but absolutely shut down anytime I (or another member) wanted to help players improve. Guess it's hard to find a good spot between friendly players and complete casuals who don't give a single shit about what they're doing.
Hoping the current trend keeps up though, had three runs were more experienced players helped out a new tank and healer, and it all went smooth and nice.

What depth? There is no depth at all. You learn your static rotation that includes lining up your oGCDs for maximum performance and thats it. There is no dynamic relationship between stats and players that would affect your rotations in any meaningful way and the overall progression design is solely based on that +1. Just because you press more buttons than WoW and its other WoW-clone siblings does not make it "deep".

Oh you have to be jesting at this point. The communication between XIV's team and the playerbase is as sterile as it can be. Literally just asian WoW at this point. Come now if you want a proper example of communication and desire to improve go look at Warframe and their dev communication with players. Sure the game isn't the best but you can be damn sure they try and listen to their fans or even straight out tell them why they think their right without stepping on any toes. XIV's team takes months to respond with a shitty excuse about limitations if they don't straight up ignore it.

Sure the analogy works if you want to consider toppings the equivalent of in-game textures. The game is stagnant and hasn't improved on any of their designs. They have a solid foundation for raids and dungeons, especially so after mixing them a bit in the Baldesion Arsenal but holy shit do they really ignore building up anything. I think its more fair to say they give us a piece of toast with a thin layer of jelly or spread and never think to top it off with more toast.

Bizarrely the game truly "begins" and opens up at 50, and by the time you max level and do all the advancement quests, your class is barely recognizable from when you started.

Solo is hell, that's all you need know. And solo healer is like an exercise in hatred. So I do reccomend trying to find a linkshell or a discord that specializes in premade feast or pvp in general, try during the start of a new season when most people are grinding their ranks out.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the aggro-visibility was patched in later when YoshiP took over. Before that, all you had was general ranking indicators to give an idea of level-difference between enemies (since their level wasn't visible at the time).

That said, aggro shit seems useless to mask even back then since people 'were' used to being glued to a wiki (even XIfags) because of the lack of basic QoL the game provides.

Literally all those skills are OGCD. Granted, Chakra and Tornado requires setup, but you just get 3 greased lightning and 4 chakras, and you got your double barreled shotgun ready to shoot a healer.
