Because TVs used to have different outputs, so games from different regions would not work on them.

Different regions usually have their own branch of a company. Sony of America don't want you funding Sony of Europe and losing money to them.

Many reasons. Most to do with imports and region prices. Let's say that the price conversion between a region is 10-1. But the price for a game is only 3-1. Convert and import and you can get the same game for much less. With a digital store and better standardized prices, the need for region locks went down and only Nintendo was really adamant on it for a while because version differences and them not wanting to be accountable for that shit.
