Despite having enough hard drive space, I can't bring myself to have more than 2 or 3 games installed at all times. I always install ONLY what I intend to play. When I'm done with some, I unnistall it immediately unless I'm planning to do a second run very very soon.
And it's not a matter of size either. I do the exact same with roms.

What about games you spent hours modding? I know the mod files still lurk in the folders after uninstalling the game but I never figured out if reinstalling the game won't break the mods.

Give the FPS genre another chance and play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. The first or third one will do just fine, just avoid Clear Sky for now.
Also, Pathologic if you're in for some slav visual novel with amazing lore.
I could also recommend the first Deus Ex, although it's an obvious choice by now.

Single player is alright. It has some great replayability with all the dynamic ops mods and such. Apex campaign is made for co-op though, and sort of resembles Ghost Recon more than anything. Base campaign is pretty cool, but cannot be played in co-op.
Have about 1.5k+ hours that don't show up since I was using an external launcher in the old /a3g/ days.

You pretty much need a friend with the game for any sort of proper co-op experience. Or to be part of a bigger community. I don't know if broma is still around, /a3g/ is long dead and buried though. I would definitely wait for a sale if you're interested in the game. The DLC is whatever (and can even be used in MP if the admin has it, iirc) but the new island (map) brought by Apex is fucking 10/10, at least compared to Altis/Stratis.

I also have slightly sour feelings towards 2 because I was hellbent on beating the game without a guide after needing one several times in 1, but there was a certain part in 2 that completely broke me and I'm a bit bitter about it

Yeah I really like it, the atmosphere of the game is top notch.
It's only boring if you don't like exploring abandoned industrial areas (because it's pretty much just a walking simulator).
