It also used to not have marketplace and level cancer for profiles. those articles are misleading and you shouldn't accept them at face value. I'm a game dev. The rule of thumb for rolling sales and distribution (downloading,patching,etc.) on your own is an average of 5% of your money lost to those things. An average. That's been almost exactly right for us - many developers roll sales on their own in addition to selling their game on steam just because it's so easy to implement.

Of course there are payment methods that are retardedly expensive and take a 20% cut or whatever. But the vast, vast majority of people use payment processors with tiny fees. So Steam is taking at maximum an average cut of 25% on top of everything they spend.

I say at max because since Valve operates on such a huge scale, they most certainly amortize a shit ton of costs which makes the whole process to them a lot cheaper.

epic is doubly right on the spot because exposing the payment processing fees to users actually points out how absurd some of these payment methods are (cards bought at retailers, etc.). this finally creates some pressure to make them cheaper in general.
